Rai Alexander aka “Sunny” is excited to announce the upcoming clean version of her debut single, I’m Not the One, that is scheduled to be released on November 24th, 2020. Sunshine Art Therapy is Sunny’s public creative outlet that is currently in the final stages of completion, but driven by a purpose to give artists across the world a platform to express themselves, whether through music or visual art.
I’m Not the One is a raw Hip-Hop track that compliments Rai’s infectious energy, and the unforgivable lyrics truly capture the intended tone. Listening to I’m Not the One, you can hear influences from decades of music such as the smooth 90’s r&b and feel and modern hip-hop vibes.
Rai comes from a creatively diverse background. She was introduced to art expression at an early age with her mother sparking her art creativity, and her father sparking the musical creativity. During her school career, one of the schools she auditioned for was LaGuardia High School, AKA the “Fame” High School, which is one of the top 10 Art high schools in the United States with alumni such as Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston, Al Pacino, Liza Minnelli, Nicki Minaj, and Milton Glaser. Milton Glaser is the designer of the “DC Comics” logo and the “I <3 New York”.
Sunny was accepted into LaGuardia High School to receive this highly sought-after and dynamic academic experience which allows students to spend half of their day, every day focusing on learning and growing their skills in their chosen art form. She commuted 4 hours on NYC public transit each day into Midtown Manhattan from the “suburbs” of Queens by herself to take advantage of this rare opportunity. Waking up before dawn, two hours to get there, two hours to get home every night for four years starting at the young age of 14. Sunny was immersed in Art, Music, Dance, Drama. She fell in love with the healing and supportive and therapeutic nature of the Arts, and ultimately ended up graduating with a 3.6 GPA. She was accepted at multiple colleges and universities, including receiving a full scholarship to NYU.
With a continued burning passion for the arts, Rai decided to attend MICA; The Maryland Institute College of Art located in Baltimore, Maryland where she majored in Photography as visual communication, and minored in creative writing with a focus on African American Studies. The experience was life-changing. Rai graduated from MICA in 2000 and was the recipient of the Meyer Traveling Fellowship; a grant that offered her the experience of traveling through West Africa for a photo editorial project on the people of Ghana, and their connections to the many slave forts still on their land left standing as a by-product of colonization.
Sunny is producing music straight from the heart, no filter(except for the fact this is a clean version of the track). The entire concept of her music and Sunshine Art Therapy was created with the idea that there is no wrong way to speak your truth, feel your feelings, or make your art. The mission is to create an open, welcoming and safe space for artists to express themselves through a supportive nurturing online artist community.
