“Goonies never say die” goes one of the most iconic lines from all of 1980s cinema, courtesy of screenwriter Chris Columbus and director Richard Donner in their 1985 adventure classic The Goonies. Through the years that line has taken on deeper and richer significance as the movie has become embraced by families as a true evergreen and such popular shows as Stranger Things has dutifully and affectionately paid homage to a story originally conceived by none other than Steven Spielberg.
The above Goonies catchphrase has once again been successfully put to the test with the news from The Hollywood Reporter that much of the original cast – Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Kerri Green, Jonathan Ke Quan and Joe Pantoliano – will be reuniting for a December 5 virtual reunion to help the No Kid Hungry charity.
No Kids Hungry is a favorite cause here at Vents, and with good reason: The charity works diligently at feeding children and their families in the midst of the word-wide pandemic (and beyond). Right now the world can use all of the love and tending to that we can give it, so kudos to this worthwhile charity. The Goonies virtual reunion will be free for fans to stream and donations are encouraged.
This will be a sophomore reunion for the busy cast of this seminal film: They reunited early in 2020 for another charitable cause along with Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner, Chris Columbus and pop legend Cyndi Lauper (who sang the theme in the ’85 flick, The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough).
Legendary director Richard Donner – Superman: The Movie, Lethal Weapon, the original Twilight Zone series – issued a statement about the reunion saying, in part: “The same spirit of bravery, sacrifice, and camaraderie that the Goonies showed in our movie is what families all over the world are experiencing as we all face this pandemic.”
So what are you waiting for, Vents readers? Turn out this coming Saturday for a great cause the way any bona-fide Goonies-holic would! Says Tom Nelson – CEO of Share Our Strength (the outfit behind No Kid Hungry) far better than I ever could: “With more students learning virtually than ever before and with record jobs and wages lost, an unprecedented number of kids are going hungry during this crisis. Amidst this increased need and an uncertain school year, kids need our support more than ever. We’re grateful to the cast of The Goonies, Warner Bros., and Warner Media and those tuning in to the reunion special to help ensure kids have access to the food they need.”
