Hi Jimmy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Pretty great, considering, ya know, everything this year haha.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Salvage”?
Absolutely. Its about struggle; struggling to grow as a person, to feel secure about your place in the world and getting by on what you got, despite the hurdles and obstacles.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Looking at the world around me, the people that I know and love, and its been tough all around for a long while. Making rent, feeding their kids, just barely keeping it together and not having a mental breakdown, and then another class of people telling you none of it is good enough, and then it feels like its never going to be good enough. It was an attempt at really digging into those thoughts and feelings.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
That would be great! I did have an idea before the whole COVID thing so I have to go back to the drawing board and reapproach. Which is sort of fitting considering how the song is kind of about making things work through all the bullshit.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing, I always enjoy. It sort of flowed out of my quite organically. Its like, I had some of the parts written long before like some chord structures and stuff and then one day it all kind of came together. I recorded and mixed it all myself and thats still a bit of a tough one for me. I drive myself crazy trying to make things sound how my brain thinks they should! Definitely put more time into that process than the writing.
What role does Hamilton play in your music?
Its a no-nonsense working class town, in a lot of ways. People get by on grit and have to push a lot of their personal growth and problems out if the way to survive. And still, I love the place. I carry that working class, blue collar mentality with me always.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! New song is ready to go. Its about trying to find a place in the world, and the existential dread of making art.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Its called “Who The Hell” and it’ll be out in a few weeks! No solid date yet but there will be soon.
What else is happening next in The Rough Go’s world?
Doing more of my weekly politics and culture podcast, The Rough Report, and a line up of songs that I’ll be releasing over the coming weeks and months, and I got some fun ideas about doing livestream shows and making them more interesting.
