How Does LinkedIn Help Your Career Growth?

What is LinkedIn?

Have you ever wished for the platform where all your achievements, career accomplishments,  the whole resume would be put forward for all the world- well, at least half of a billion of it- to see? Everything would be simple- no headache and rushing to send CVs to potential employers …

Well, that wish was fulfilled in 2003- the year LinkedIn first launched and became the world’s largest innovative professional network on the internet. It is the place for everyone who is seeking a new job, a way to solidify professional relationships, students searching for internships, etc. LinkedIn helps to connect potential employers- be it companies, small or larger businesses- to potential employees- freelancers, or other kinds of professionals. Here you have an opportunity to showcase your set of skills, education, experience- in short, tell your story featuring your career!

Are you still not sure whether you need a LinkedIn account or not? Let’s dive deeper, then.

Do people actually get a job on LinkedIn?

YES. You know that we live in a digital world, right? So no surprise here that the social network became one of the dominant forces for professional industries. 74% of people now use social networks to find a job. The Internet gives you all the benefits of simple communication, you should use it. And as I mentioned earlier, LinkedIn is one of the best platforms for people looking for the job of their dreams.

But in order to use social media and especially LinkedIn to your advantage, you need to be your own marketer and present yourself to all the potential employers in your full professional glory! That means you need an optimized profile with detailed descriptions of your career journey, experiences, and a vision for your future career. Your profile should motivate others to want to connect with you and start professional relationships.

What do we need to consider when creating a LinkedIn profile?

1. Determine and observe your audience

And this is one of the most important and universal tips that you should consider not only on LinkedIn but on any other social networking sites. It does not matter if you are creating your content for either entertainment purposes or business- you still are creating content that will be seen by your followers and your connections. Observe the data of your LinkedIn profile and provide valuable content that will make people click. The more interactive your profile will be the more benefit you get- the LinkedIn algorithm will notice the high levels of engagement and help your traffic. So connect with others, comment around, be active! Sometimes being interactive, especially when you are new on LinkedIn is pretty tough- you don’t have enough people who see your content, but don’t let it discourage you. You can always get likes and followers for your profile using some non-harmful tricks!

2. Is your content attractive?

Let’s take a step back and scrutinize your content. Think of it not as your creation but as someone else’s- your future employer, for example. Would you be attracted to this content? Would it spark your interest? What changes would you make? Ask yourself these questions, be the best critique for your profile and posts.

One practical tip that I can give you is to enrich your posts and articles with pictures- putting visual stimuli in your content always makes it more noticeable, trustworthy, and interesting. Studies show that articles that contain illustrations, pics, etc. attract 80% more attention and therefore audience than empty, plain ones.

3. And where is your profile picture?

I would rather hear that, of course, you have a profile picture on your LinkedIn, but … If you do not, now is your chance to make some corrections.

The profile picture is a must in your LinkedIn profile. No one will click your profile if they don’t have a visual representation of you as a real person. A blank gray default icon will not attract anyone. It will be seen as an unprofessional gesture from your side and will make people wary of you and suspicious of your persona with all of your career and educational achievements.

The rule of thumb here is to make your picture look professional. I know you like your cats and puppies, I know it is hard not to post pictures with them but … Bear with me, keep your LinkedIn strictly professional- remember, it is a professional network, not a personal one. Gods of social networking granted us with other platforms like Instagram and Facebook for such deeds.

4. Are you random with your connection requests?

Here, my friends, ‘the more the better’ motto will not work. You ought to be more selective with your connections as well as more attentive. Do not ‘click and go’. When you choose to connect with someone make a little introductory text and let them know who you are. Doing so will make your connection more personal and raise the awareness of you. People love when someone is attentive towards them especially when it comes to professional relationships. Study the person before you request a connection, spend a little time on forming introductory text that fits the aforementioned person.  Introducing yourself to someone who will be a part of your professional network will pay off in the long run.

5. How active are you?

Not to sound too dramatic, but taking care of your LinkedIn profile as if it were your houseplant who needs attention… is utterly important. Appearing every 3 or 6 months will not do any good for your career and all the benefit you were going to get from this professional platform will be lost. So tips here are pretty simple: update your status every day, share the videos that are concerning your profession, comment, and be actively involved with your connections. You need to keep your LinkedIn up and running!

6. Show your personality

Sometimes keeping everything strict and professional becomes a tad bit boring. But showing your personality and character- the person behind all these achievements- to others is nevertheless essential. Write a summary that tells a story about you as well as shows your work ethic and overall human qualities. At the end of the day, we are not just robots who just work and ascend on the career ladder. I can’t stress enough how important relating to others is for a healthy working environment and professional relationships.
