Quarantine in 2020 has been rough on a lot of people. Founder of KLA$$ KULTURE, Michelle Borokhovich from Hewlett, NY, was one of those people. She found herself in a very depressed and lonely place in her life. However, instead of going on a downward spiral, she decided to take an idea she had since she was in 9th grade and dedicate all of her time energy into it. This would end up being one of the best decisions she has ever made.
Michelle saved up all of the money she made from working four jobs before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. She already had experience working as a salesperson at Mixology Clothing Store and an art teacher assistant. These roles provided her with valuable knowledge and experience that she carried over into her budding clothing company. Since 2017, she managed to save up $10,700 and wanted nothing other than to invest it all into clothes. Coming from the same town as DKNY designer Donna Karen meant she was going to be in good company as a fashion designer.
Under the KLA$$ KULTURE brand, Michelle first started out selling bucket hats that said “KLA$$” on them. She initially ordered just 70 hats in three different colors (red, light gray, and beige), which ended up selling out in just two days. Her success came from her clever advertising tactics on social media juggernaut Instagram. It wasn’t long before celebrities like 6ix9ine and his girlfriend were spotted wearing them, as well as the model and actress Emily Austin. In fact, Emily is a brand ambassador for KLA$$ KULTURE to this day, and has appeared in the Fall/Winter 2020 collection photoshoot for the brand.
Due to all the buzz generated by these high-profile sightings with her bucket hats, a lot of people began asking about the hats. That’s when she realized something big was happening. Michelle quickly trademarked her designs and started making streetwear apparel like oversized crewnecks, pullovers, sweatpants, and beanies.
Michelle felt strongly that she was onto something massive, so she went all-in and invested $7,500 into 250 pieces of clothing to see how well that would sell. On her first day of releasing her collection, she sold 115 pullovers, simply from the buzz generated on Instagram. On November 22nd, Michelle launched a website for KLA$$ KULTURE that now features her entire clothing line.
Currently, Michelle is working with Nathan Mogul, who is the founder of Plug Talk Media, on an upcoming billboard in Times Square, NYC by the end of November 2020. Mogul now regularly works with high-end celebrities and clients that include 10K Projects and Create Music Group.
The foundation upon with KLA$$ KULTURE is built upon is the philosophy that the world needs to have a little bit more positivity, as well as become more accepting and carefree. Since Michelle only founded the company this year, KLA$$ KULTURE is just getting started, so be prepared to see a lot more from this brand in the coming months and years. Right now, apparel from this clothing line is available exclusively from the KLA$$ KULTURE website.
