With 2020 nearing an end, many people in Canada are optimistic about the coming year. With news regarding development of potentially effective vaccines for COVID-19, many are ready to leave behind the train of bad news and move forward to a near future filled with social interactions, travelling, and life as we once knew it. Experts believe that this optimism will have an impact on how consumers behave this holiday season. With travel regulations in effect in most urban cities, shoppers are seeking alternative ways to gift to others and treat themselves. This trend is already being seen in the cosmetic industry where the number of procedures performed has increased by 40% compared to last year. In fact the number of non-invasive cosmetic procedures performed including botox and filler injectables are increasing more than ever.
With the restrictions of the pandemic, many are allocating their travel money towards self care, skin health and overall appearance. This is consistent with a well-known theory called the lipstick effect. This phenomenon explains that when facing an economic crisis consumers will be more willing to buy less costly luxury goods. Instead of buying expensive trips and cars for example, people will buy expensive lipstick or receive cosmetic treatments.
Dr. Yasha Tashakkor, Medical director at Nexx MD in North Vancouver explains “the number of non-surgical, minimally invasive procedures for facial enhancements have nearly doubled since last year this time. In many ways, this year people are investing in themselves to look and feel better”. Dr. Tashakkor explains there are several reasons behind this trend. People are more at home these days and have more time to research. Many are having meetings via zoom conferences and the webcam works as a magnifying mirror. People are looking at their own faces and their eyes longer than ever. Experts say this is a main reason behind the “Zoom Boom” in the rate of cosmetic procedures performed. More and more people are noticing those fine wrinkles and the longer that video thumbnail stares back at them, the more they start to notice things. Were those crow’s feet there before lockdown? Is one eyebrow higher than the other?
Dr. Tashakkor says the requirement of masks has made it easy for any amount of downtime and bruising to be hidden. Further, with advanced prevention protocols in place, Vancouver’s top cosmetic clinics are making a beauty consult much safer than shopping at a crowded mall. “all medical forms and other paperwork is done online prior to the appointment to minimize unnecessary hand or surface contact” explains Dr. Tashakkor. “at Nexx MD, at least 30 minutes between patients is allocated to properly clean and sanitize the room with medical-grade disinfectant”.
This holiday season, the gift of self care may be the best gift of all. Many women still find comfort in the simple pleasures of a “self-care days” or a swipe of lipstick before a virtual meeting. Even before the pandemic, the definition of “beauty” was becoming more global, expansive, and intertwined with a sense of well-being. The COVID-19 crisis is not likely to change these trends—and in that, there is reason for hope. With 2021 around the corner, one has the choice to approach it with an optimistic, rejuvenated and youthful presence, inside and out.
