INTERVIEW: Beyond Extinction

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Been doing great, excited for our upcoming releases after a long period of writing and recording!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “God Complex”?

It’s a proper heavy metalcore tune, a lot of slipknot vibes and my personal favourite main riff. we had a lot of fun in the writing and recording process with this one

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Mainly just anger at a lot of people and events we were seeing in the world, we had a lot of stored ideas for riffs and we used a lot of different aspects and paired them with the themes a Jasper had in mind lyrically and came through with God Complex!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

filming with talon was a great experience, he’s a great guy, really knows his shit and has a good eye on how to make a sick video. even though the weather forced us to change the filming location, that didn’t phase us and we carried on with a different plan. definitely a great experience, enjoyed the whole day!

The single comes off your new album The Fatal Flaws Of Humankind – what’s the story behind the title?

Lyrics and topic content is made by Jasper, our vocalist. He focussed the ideas on issues and failures which as a species we have perpetuated and will ultimately lead to the downfall of humanity. Deep and powerful content is often subjective too so we’d love for our listeners to read the lyrics and interpret them in their own way.

How was the recording and writing process?

Very fun! Writing was done at Jasper’s house in his cabin (shoutout to his parents for being awesome and letting us use the space!) and we spent the best part of 60 hours as a band and hundreds more individually writing the material. We recorded it at Soundlab studios with Matt Williams, he has done all our releases since late 2019 and is absolutely brilliant to work with. It’s professional but we have a proper laugh too, fantastic times.

How has Fit For An Autopsy and Thy Art Is Murder influenced your writing?

Lyrically and vocally they’re an inspiration for Jasper which lends a hand in writing vocals. Instrumentally the dissonant guitar parts and heavy hitting, simplified breakdowns are absolutely brutal so we take a lot of influence from that.

What role does Essex play in your music?

Essex is so integral to everything we do as a band, the local scene is really the heart and soul of our work. you absolutely can’t get anywhere without a strong foundation in your local scene, and with the help of the other incredible bands in the area, we’ve been building it over the past few years, and look forward to continuing to do so as the live music scene comes back to life.

What aspect of human kind did you get to explore on this record?

It’s mainly the gaps and problems that being a human has created over millions of years of evolution, but which have been accelerated in the last few centuries. Each song describes a different flaw in human society. ‘God complex’- Betrayal and exclusion, ‘Apex Predator’- Violence and Tyranny, ‘Bones Like Branches’- Absolutism and unacceptance, ‘A Face Without Features’- The constant search for power and knowledge.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

It’s very hard not to look at the world today and think ‘how the hell have we got to this point’ and as a teenager it is often difficult to express the anger and fear in a meaningful way. I (Jasper) think as someone who has studied politics for 4 years and at university that I’m more exposed to the issues than the average person and it is no exaggeration to say they are on my mind more or less 24/7, so writing about them and expressing my fears and feelings was a natural release for me.

What else is happening next in Beyond Extinction’s world?

Hopefully, a huge run of shows as soon as they’re allowed back on! We’ve got a few goals in mind, for example we’d love to play bloodstock one day and get to play shows in Europe or abroad too, but for now we’re focussed on taking all the opportunities we can to play and expose our music to as many people as possible!    ||
