Is this familiar: You apply foundation, try applying liquid liner, mess it up, get rid of everything, and end up settling on a statement lip? If yours is a love-hate relationship with eyeliner, it is time you tried out the simple strategies below from a professional makeup artist.
1. Use the Proper Tool for Your Skill Level
If it’s your first time using liquid liner, a Lovoir eyeliner is the easiest to control. It is like the eyeliner’s training wheels. If you are advanced or are aiming for a graphic look, you should consider getting a brush-tip applicator. It might require a bit more patience and precision, but the razor-thin lines you will end up with will definitely be worth it.
2. Hold Your Eyeliner Near Its End
You might be surprised by just how much of a difference that simple switch makes. If you grip the eyeliner further up tends to put too much pressure on the tip and this can make the liner goopy or jagged.
3. Slightly Tilt Up Your Chin
Once you have tilted up your chin slightly, you should then look down into the mirror so that your eyes are closed halfway. While it might feel counterintuitive at first, this angle will ensure that liner does not smear all over your lid or even appear uneven after it is on.
4. Apply Shadow, Then Liner
The great thing about powder is that it acts as a magnet for liquid liners to adhere to and this translates to less smudging and slipping throughout the day. If you plan to use a cream formula, you should first prep lids with a primer.
5. Give Yourself a Guideline
If you are a person with shaky hands, it can be a good idea to first sketch a line using a creamy pencil. Once you have the desired shape, you can then trace over it with a liquid formula for definition and depth.
6. Do Short Strokes
Instead of trying to line your eyes in one fell swoop, try drawing small dashes along your top lashes and then connect them into a single solid stroke. Alternatively, you can hold your eyeliner horizontally so that it is parallel to the floor and run it sideways against the lash line.
7. Use a Slanted Brush to Achieve Perfect Cat Eyes
A slanted brush is ideal if you want to free-hand symmetrical flicks. To do this, dip the brush into a gel or liquid pigment and place it along the eye’s outer corner and create your wing by dragging the brush in on a diagonal. Finish lining your lid and then fill in any holes for a complete look.
8. Clean Up Smudges Properly
To refine edges or fix mistakes without the need to mess up the rest of the makeup, use a pointed cotton swab soaked in cleansing water. The great thing about it is that it is not greasy and it will not tug on your delicate eye skin.
9. Don’t Forget to Tightline
It is the secret to making your liner have a polished look. Do it by lifting your lid gently and wiggling the liner in between the lashes as close as possible to the root. Add some mascara and you are good to go!
