Hi Untold, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello, thanks for having me on Vents Magazine. I’ve been really good thanks, considering the circumstances. Just keeping a positive mindset and staying productive.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Have You Heard It”?
Yeah sure, ‘Have You Heard It’ is my third single release. I wrote the track about the willingness to succeed in whatever you have set your mind too. With this track in particular, I have delved more to my poetic side and you will hear me going on and off beat to create a more unique sound. It’s been described as ‘Untold Poet is boxing the beat but is doing so with finesse’. It’s a real energetic ambient beat that I feel works very well with my lyricism.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
What inspired me to write the song was my personal experiences within the music industry. It’s a very hard industry with crazy competition, but no matter what, you need to stay resilience and keep your mind on your goals.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes, I’ve actually recorded an acoustic version of the track which is very stripped back and slowed down. To me it feels like a more emotional version as the main focus is on the lyrics. This track will feature in a short film that I’ll be working on next year, so visuals will be coming!
How was the recording and writing process?
So I came across the beat from a producer I’ve worked with previously (Pink Fader). I was instantly drawn in and the words just came to mind. “Have you heard it the original wordsmith, Twenty four seven on a beat I deserve this”. I knew at that point this track would be about the drive to succeed. It took me around four days to write and perfect. The process of recording I normally follow, and was the same in this case, is to record a draft copy at my home studio. If I’m happy with how it’s sounding I then scout an engineer, who I feel likes my sound and the track, and get to work at their studio; I also value their input into the song. On this occasion, I used Gem the engineer at 3Flows Studio based in North London. We recorded the vocals and got down the mix and master, which took two days.
What role does Essex play in your music?
Essex is my home county and a lot of my lyrics refer to myself growing up in the area. The Essex music scene in my opinion is very good. We have a lot of music venues, open mic nights and festivals that local musicians can perform at. It’s great to go to these events to watch and network with other aspiring artists and it encourages me within my music.
Would you call this a departure from your previous musical work or rather a continuation?
I would call it a departure from my band days in ‘New Subjects’. The sound I’ve created as ‘Untold Poet’ is unique in its own right as I’ve merged my rap and poetic side of my craft together. This is a completely different sound to what I was producing back then. I learnt a lot from my previous musical journey and am using the knowledge I picked up then this time round on my solo career.
Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! I’m always writing more material and my next release will be a track called ‘Don’t Understand’, due for release in early January 2021. You will see my Poetic side on this track as I talk about issues, which I feel: ‘I Don’t Understand’.
I’m also working on a lot more Rap music so expect to see another side of ‘Untold Poet’ in 2021.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Untold Poet – Don’t Understand, Early January 2021.
What else is happening next in Untold Poet’s world?
So after the next single release, expect to see a short film EP. I start filming early next year; the short film will incorporate four music videos, which will seamlessly touch between dialogue and music to create one full piece of art. Around 30mins in length, the piece will be about the act of kindness and how that one goodwill gesture could change a persons outlook and outcome in their life. I’m very excited about working on this project and look forward to sharing it with everyone once it’s completed.
I’m also working on a few collaborations with some great artists, so keep an eye out for those!
