INTERVIEW: Singer-Songwriter TALIA

Hi TALIA, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, thank you for having me! I’ve been well. Taking it day by day and still learning how to navigate life amidst this pandemic. I’ve had so much more time to write and create, so that’s a huge plus.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “hyde park”?

I wrote this song to feel like an inner diary, a daydream, a longing for someone. All the ways that love can bring color and inspiration into my life. The violin swells are the butterflies in my stomach. The guitar percussion is the heart beat. It’s such a magical experience to discover parts of yourself in a new place simultaneously with someone else.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I was studying abroad in London in Spring of 2019. I fell in love there and felt so inspired by the energy of the city. My experience while living in London definitely inspired the song. I lived less than ten minutes away from Hyde Park, so I spent a lot of my time there.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

I got together a small crew of friends the week leading up to the shoot. My friends Jessica and Nick were incredible with helping me organize everything so that we could execute my vision. I directed the video and we shot it all in less than 4 hours! I just wanted to capture the intimate tenderness and daydream-like quality of the song. We chose a backdrop color that felt like London and brought in flowers and plants to the studio since we couldn’t physically be in Hyde Park. I had so much fun filming and editing the video. It genuinely feels like an introspection into my experience in London.

How was the recording and writing process?

This past summer, my brother and I had a mini studio set up in the basement of our family home in Georgia. I recorded ‘hyde park’ one early morning in our studio. It was just me, my guitar, violin, mic, and laptop. The process was very intimate and raw.

What role does London play in your music, have you been influenced by London artists?

I saw a ton of cool art at the Tate Modern and was exposed to innovative theatre, which expanded my world view. Bakar, Arlo Parks, and Coldplay are dope artists that have been on repeat for me lately.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, for sure! I’ve worked on more music than ever during quarantine and I’m itching to release more into the world. It’s all in the works, but new stuff is definitely on the way.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m releasing my EP headrush early 2021, sometime in the Spring!

What else is happening next in TALIA’s world?

I’ve been working on creating a bunch of new music and visuals. I’m inspired by a bunch of different genres and styles, so I’m excited to explore and keep sharing new sides of my sound.
