One Voice Children’s Choir is an uplifting, internationally renowned performing group and nonprofit organization on a mission to inspire the world through music. The choir began in 2002 when the Winter Olympic Games were held in Salt Lake City, UT and from those humble beginnings, the group has grown into a force in the entertainment world.
OVCC participated in NBC’s America’s Got Talent Season 9 (quarter-finalists), performed at the White House and even toured across the United States and abroad. Most recently, they released a cover of BTS’ hit song “Dynamite” which currently has over 2.5 million views on YouTube.
1. Out of all the songs out there, why did you choose to cover BTS’ “Dynamite”?
Andee: Because it’s a really upbeat and fun song! It makes you want to get up and dance! It makes you happy.
Ty: I couldn’t stop singing Dynamite the very first second I ever heard it! Once I did, I was singing it all day and all night! I think that’s why we chose to do it. Also, it pumps people up when they are feeling down. There are a lot of sad people lately.
2. What was the approach the choir took with this song? What sort of changes did you make to it?
Shiloh: We wanted to add our own style/twist on the song, but still keep the original message of fun and happiness. Masa is a musical genius and always has such incredible arrangements! He added a more classical intro and included the string players, which I think gives our cover even more depth.
Sierra: I like how our version, at the beginning, totally changed the vibe with the orchestra and beautiful harmonies.
3. How was the recording process?
Andee: The recording process was so much fun! Masa first had each of us send in a vocal track of our part, since we can’t sing together as a group because of COVID. He then worked his magic and mixed all of our tracks together. Since the choir has 200 kids, I’m sure it took him a long time, but he’s incredible so I knew he could do it.
When we recorded the video it was so much fun and very exciting! It was neat to be the first ones on U2’s stage and perform under the bright lights! It was great to see all of my friends again too, since we haven’t been able to all get together because of COVID, even if we had to wear a mask and social distance. I love being in One Voice Children’s Choir! Everyone is so nice and I really like that it has made my voice better and that now I’m more confident as a singer.
Ty: The recording process is kind of like a job. It’s a lot of work, but so worth it when I see the videos! I love being in the studio because it makes me feel like a rock star!
4. As a group that seeks to spread hope and joy, how do you choose the songs you perform?
Madalyn: Our director Masa has a wonderful ability to choose songs that are fun to listen to, but also deliver a great message. A good example was our viral video cover of Imagine Dragons, Believer. The song is a lot of fun to listen to on repeat and also gives people strength through its lyrics.
Lauren: At this time we see the suffering and hardships so many people are experiencing and we believe now more than ever is the time to spread joy and love to those around us. So, when it come to picking songs to sing we try to keep in mind that we need to give positivity to the community and do our best to cheer up people on the screens they see us through. Our last music video, Dynamite, was one that was uplifting and one that we believed would get people moving to the beat! We had fun filming it even though we were socially distanced which I think is a good message: that even though we do not get to be in close proximity to each other and give hugs we can still have fun and bring joy.
5. Does the new cover song mean we can expect an EP or album? If so, how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Ty: Yes, we’re working on a holiday EP right now and also an album that should come out in the first part of next year! I can’t wait. I don’t know what the title is going to be yet, but there are a lot of good ideas we’re looking at.
6. What else is happening next in One Voice Children’s Choir’s world?
Crystal: We have quite a few things coming up. I don’t want to say too much because it takes away from the fun a little bit, but I’m excited to share them. We have a mix of more fun, upbeat songs, and calmer, more inspiring songs that we hope you’ll love as much as we do.
