Hi Sydney, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey, thanks for talking with me again! I am pretty great, really excited to have these songs out in the world. Hope you are doing well too!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Simple Man”?
“Simple Man” means a lot to me. I feel confident in saying that for most writers, writing a happy song is really hard. I’ve struggled with it for years. “Simple Man” is so simplistic and captures the feeling of loving someone so much that it’s really all you need. It’s wholesome and warm and happy!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
“Simple Man” came from my last serious relationship. What makes this song so special is that I started writing it when I was in that happy place but never got around to finishing it until the relationship was over. Even though my heart was broken, I knew I had to come back and let that story live through my lyrics.
The single comes off your new album Dreamt of an Ex – what’s the story behind the title?
This EP represents a chapter in my life that was incredibly special. It’s a story from start to finish. Starting with love, ending up at heartbreak, and ending with a message of “I’ll love you when you’re broken.” The last song on the EP was inspired by a story my grandmother told me about my grandfather’s love for her before he passed. It will be a surprise to her when she sees the song on there. It perfectly wraps up the EP in a way I’m so happy with!
How was the recording and writing process?
I recorded the EP in December right before the world started falling apart. I flew down to Nashville to record with a few friends. The energy felt just right and I was so happy to be recording these pieces of my heart and soul with friends who were happy to be there and to be a part of the process. It was an incredible experience and one I’ll always remember.
What role does NYC play in your music?
It sometimes feels like NYC has a role of its own in my music. Not only am I inspired by the energy of the city, I reference street names, bars, subway lines, etc. Living my life in New York is a part of who I am, therefore, it always sneaks its way into my lyrics!
What aspect of love and heartbreak did you get to explore on this record? Where did you find the inspiration for the song and lyrics?
All aspects! This EP is a story from start to finish. There are happy songs about love and there are sad songs about heartbreak. I was inspired by real life events. The last song is particularly special because it was inspired by my grandmother. Her story captured exactly what I felt is most important when loving someone – “no matter what happens, I’ll always love you.”
What else is happening next in Sydney Lauren’s world?
I’ve got tons more songs and hope to release them soon! The world is a strange place at the moment and music is getting me through!
