South-London based alt-pop trickster Pet Grotesque (PG for short) is today sharing ‘Blanket’, a soulful third taste of his sophomore LP Female Synth Player, out tomorrow.
Set over floaty synths and jagged guitars, ‘Blanket’ sees PG alternating between raging at and grovelling to/pining for a ghostly and far away lover. From the surreal opening lyrics “you’re egg, you’re my basket, you’re my egg you’re my blanket”, ‘Blanket’ exists in a realm not too far away from reality but far enough that anything goes. Progressing from the solo, lo-fi bedroom pop of PG’s first album Good Egg in 2017, Female Synth Player is “PG in HD”’ – working with production team MenCare (Josh Baxter – PVA, & Adam Cartwright – Tiña, Uncle Tesco). The album collages the experiences of the last three years into a bombastic collection of songs.
With early cuts ‘Scratch’ and ‘Pingin’ Alone’ receiving a warm reception from the likes of So Young, Backseat Mafia, Rough Trade Counter Culture, themostradicalist and more, Female Synth Player promises a strangely uplifting escape from such dark times.
