INTERVIEW: Swedish producer Johan Kull

Hi Johan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi Vents! It’s actually pretty good considering everything that’s happening right now. Thankfully I’ve got more time to write and produce music, the one positive thing about this awful year.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dreams”?

Dreams is my debut single and the start of my own solo project. I’ve always wanted to produce and release music but it didn’t feel right until I came up with Dreams. The song is about when your dreams doesn’t match up with your hopes or expectations and the struggle around that.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Dreams was actually started as a school project. I study at the Royal collage of music in Stockholm and Dreams wasn’t meant to be anything more than just a grade. But thanks to my girlfriend I got the courage to let it be my debut single.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Unfortunately no video plans are in the making.

How was the recording and writing process?

I have been producing and writing a lot of music through the years but have never been writing my own lyrics. But this song just came out of me. The chords, the melodies and the words came to life in the span of a day pretty much.

What role does Sweden play in your music?

Being a Swede means I’m very privileged. Thanks to Sweden I have been studying music for almost 7 years now for free. I doubt that I would be working as a musician, artist and producer if our educations had tuition fees.

Inspiration vise I look more towards american music.

How has Phoebe Bridgers and Bon Iver influenced your writing?

Both Phoebe Bridgers and Bon Iver is working with a wonderful combination of digital and acoustic sounds. They are producing such colorful soundscapes and use harmonies in a fantastic way.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I’m working in my home studio right now and writing my next single. Have a few ideas I’m developing.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No title yet, but hopefully my next single will be released in early 2021.

What else is happening next in Johan Kull’s world?

I’m taking this time to write new music and I’m currently finishing off my teaching degree.
