INTERVIEW: Friends of Clay

Hi Clay, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great!! Thank you so much for having me. I’ve been super busy making animations and songs for the new album!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Livin’ Time”?

“Livin’ Time” is a wild story about a lonesome dinosaur who’s trying to find his way in Sin City! The animation of the song really inspired the lyrics to the song and helped sculpt the whole idea of “Livin’ Time.”

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” inspired me tremendously for the visual. I love Hunter S Thompson, and really enjoyed Johnny Depp’s portrayal of him.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The claymation video for “Livin Time” was by far my most tedious and complex video I’ve done so far. It’s a video that has 5 different sets, and it took 2/3 weeks to complete each scene. The stop-motion was about 4000 photos to complete, and it was the most rewarding and time consuming video I’ve ever done!

What role does LA play in your music?

Not too many cities support art and music like Los Angeles. People might think that the musicians here go write songs on the beach or on a mountain, but that’s not where the beauty lies. As scenic and beautiful as it is, the true inspiration that drives my music comes from the people that live here. Los Angeles fosters creative thinkers – people I connect with on multiple levels. Whether those people are artists, musicians, surfers, skaters, freaks, geeks – they’re all my friends. They’re all part of me and my music.

How has the likes of Johnny Cash and David Bowie influenced your writing?

David Bowie is so influential in my music. He really amazes me and I think he’s just a melodic genius. Every song that he has made is a hit. “Changes” is really a top 10 song ever written. Johnny is such an incredible song writer. He can take the simplest idea and just make it into this vivid story that paints such an incredible image in your head. His cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails stands out to me because he completely made that song his own. I love the Nine Inch Nails version just as much.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

I’m going to release 4 singles with animations for each song! November 6th, “Livin’ Time” is dropping! Then we have one more single before the album drops in the new year! I’m so excited for everyone to hear this album that I’ve been working on for the past 2 years!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The album is going to hopefully drop early February!!

What other aspects of growing up and adulthood will you be touching on this upcoming works?

I think that everything I write deals with my adolescence. When I write my lyrics, I sometimes try and put myself back to a simpler time, or a certain moment of my childhood. It’s really important to me to be able to draw from past experiences for my music.

What else is happening next in Friends of Clay’s world?

We want to play shows early next year, and tour the record (possibly in Europe). Every month you are going to get a ton of content and videos that showcase all of our creativity! We will always be responsive and present for all of our fans, and can’t wait for everyone to see us live and hear the new record!
