INTERVIEW: Curly Blonde

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

(Answer. Brynn and Fergus) – Not bad thanks, yourself? Nah it’s been pretty great releasing this track so life can’t get any better!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Room 309”?

(Answer. Fergus) – We can! Room 309 is a track that we’ve had floating around in our heads for about 2 years now. It’s a really up-beat, summery, feel-good vibe sound, yet possesses a deeper meaning through the lyrics.

The lyrics stipulate someone who had such high aspirations with their life and set aspirational goals growing up, yet, they’re extremely unsatisfied with how things have turned out and whether they can ever have a meaningful life.

The song captures a moment where you either make the move and live out those dreams, or whether you fall into the masses and go through the motions.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

(Answer. Brynn) – Yes I can remember it clearly! I was sitting in my university college room and I had a mini existential crisis where I thought “what am I really doing with my life?”. I played around with my acoustic guitar and found a nice chord progression. The lyrics with how I was feeling at the time just flowed really well. A few years later and both things combined formed the track to where it is today!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

(Answer. Brynn) – The filming process was so much fun! We had about 10-12 different costumes, one room to do it in and only a day to film it, so it was a very busy day from about 5am to 8pm!

With Covid-19 restrictions, we genuinely couldn’t leave the house, so the idea to create it in the way it has been presented fitted perfectly. One thing we took from the whole experience was how much more substance a nice video clip can add to your song.

How was the recording and writing process?

(Answer. Fergus) – With the song being around in our heads for so long, the writing was pretty easy. The recording process was interesting too. Because of the pandemic restrictions, nothing was open, so we converted our shed into a home studio. We had to learn a bit about recording, the right setups and so on and of course there were some hiccups, but we’re better for the experience!

What role does Victoria play in your music?

(Answer. Brynn) – While it’s been a pretty shit place to live recently with all the restrictions, we absolutely love Victoria. I’m from Western Australia originally, but I’m in awe of how good this state and the city of Melbourne is when life is normal. The music, sporting, cultural and food scene is incredible and we can’t wait to be a part of it when things open up again.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

(Answer. Fergus) – Our debut EP is coming out on November 25! Other than that, we’re always working on some new stuff and you can always find us tinkering with sounds and ideas in our studio!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

(Answer. Brynn) – November 25 for the EP and then anything else after that we hope to have out sooner rather than later!

What else is happening next in Curly Blonde’s world?

(Answer. Brynn) – Mainly the EP release date for November 25, however, we’re planning to also get into some live performances, but only once Melbourne opens up and the rest of Australia lets us in!
