INTERVIEW: Americana Folk/Roots Singer Andrea Magee

Hi Andrea, welcome to VENTS!

How have you been? Hi Vents, so good to e meet you all. I have been good, or as  good as you can be in our current world, treasuring the small  things and gentle reminders of what is important  in life.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Floating Heart”?

Floating Heart was one of the first solo songs that came about for me in this collection of songs. It’s an honest conversation with you. I was having a tough time transitioning out of a romantic relationship that had solely became a friendship and this was a song that was born during that time. I think it was my way of telling myself, ‘you will be ok”

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes a variety of changes in my life but in particular a relationship ending but not in the way it normally does. The song was me reflecting on how this particular love evolved and changed into a friendship . And this song helped me process all of this, reminding myself to always be true, honest and knowing that no matter what everything will be ok as long as you stay connected to yourself.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The video for Floating Heart was an animation. I worked closely with the artist/animator. Told her the story behind the song and one moment in particular that stood out on the day I was writing the song. This moment was also a huge inspiration for her animation. On the day I was writing the song a leaf in the shape of a heart floated by my feet and it was like all time stopped and in that moment I knew what I needed to do and say in this song. As silly as it may sound but that little leaf truly helped me navigate through a lot of the emotions I was feeling and process them and in turn a song was born.

The single comes off your new album Only Love – what’s the story behind the title?

It is exactly what is says on the tin (or is that an Irish saying lol) …I truly believe if everything is approached with love we are in a better place. Not anger, not frustration, not sadness just love. I know that’s not always the easiest thing to do but I really believe it is the best approach. If we fight through the rest and find the love in every situation then usually we can find resolve. Therefore Only Love is not just an album title but it’s a way of life for me.

How was the recording and writing process?

For this project It was magical. It was quick, easy and organic. All the songs came through honest situations and I wrote them from my heart over a period of about 6 months.

The recording was in a wonderful studio here in Austin, Wire Recording studios with the incredible Stuart Sullivan engineering. Stuart is an earth angel (and one of the BEST engineers and people out there) We spent roughly 2 -3 days in the studio recording all the songs in a live room with my band. Another group of wonderful souls. I had the incredible Dave Scher on guitars & piano, Ruby Dice on bass and Michael Davila on drums. Together with me on vocal, acoustic guitar and bodhran drum we laid down the foundation of each song and built from there.  This project is full of love and this group of musicians are first and foremost friends to me and that’s why I fell we captured what we did on these songs. I also had some other fine musicians in Austin add parts Oliver Steck on Trumpet & Kris Wade on stand up bass. All in all this was a really joyous process with a fabulous group of people and friends.

How did your musical perspective as you move away from the UK to the US?

Things are constantly changing for me in life and I feel its all about growing with it. I love my home , I love my Irish roots but I also love exploring and living and I really felt a draw to the US for me personally and musically so I took the leap of faith and did it and haven’t looked back.

What aspect of love did you get to explore on this record?

ALL of i! Love for me takes so many different shapes and forms. Its all the wonderful things we see in the movies growing up, the fairytale is a good start but it leaves out some of the more realistic sides of love. That stuff we learn as we truly live and be love. In this record I captured it all. Kind love and focusing on that, the anger love brings (Times up) , the support love brings (Old with you), the pain (Over here in Texas , Be One) I honestly feel like this album is a truthful love story through and through.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I find lyrics come to me in the strangest of places and I note them down some how. They can come watching a movie, walking my dog, going to the store. These are all moments when pinnacle lyrcis came my way that I was searching for in writing these songs.

What else is happening next in Andrea Magee’s world?

More love, more living and definitely more songs, I have already got 10 new songs for the next part of my story written since we started lockdown. With this group of songs I want to tell the next chapter. I am excited what new doors these songs will open too!
