5 Tips for Becoming a Happy Medical Student and Doctor

As a doctor who is working hard on your career, happiness is probably the furthest thing from your mind. After all, this is the time to kick it into high gear so you can do well in everything you do.

But despite that, without happiness, you’ll likely have a hard time excelling. Happiness is the key ingredient to making it through school and, later, as a physician.

You can find happiness and fulfillment through your job, that is to be sure. But along the way don’t forget to look at the bigger picture and stay thankful.

Below are five ways to stay happy because it’s vital to your success!

1. Write Down Inspirational and Motivational Quotes

It sounds funny at first, writing down positive quotes. You’re not a motivational speaker, so why take the time to do this?!

Having a list of motivational quotes to reference can get you through the crazy times.

Get yourself a journal or put some of your favorite inspiring quotes on an app that you’ll look at from time to time. The quotes can even be from doctors who have excellent advice on why you should never give up!

Doing this will help you to keep pressing on when things are challenging. And even when things are going well, you should still read the quotes so that you continue to thrive!

2. Specialize in Something You Love

Of course, you should love your pursuit as a doctor. If you don’t, you may want to think about switching careers!

But beyond that, you should specialize in something that you’re passionate about. It should be something you can see yourself doing long-term.

If that means staying in school a while longer to find that out, so be it. The last thing you want is to put yourself through years of school only to find out you made the wrong decision.

While in school, your specialty could be in endocrinology, but becoming a gynecologist interests you. If that’s the case, take time to compare the two.

Later when you get the job and discuss your physician compensation, there should be no doubts in your mind. This is what you were born to do!

Decide now what specialty you should pursue before making it your life’s purpose. It’s better to do this now instead of later when you’ve already gone through medical school!

3. Surround Yourself With People Who Support You

You’ll be working around the clock to make it through medical school. Even so, it would help if you still surrounded yourself with supportive people.

If there are naysayers who aren’t supporting your job pursuit, it’s only going to drag you down. So, find a support group who will be there for you and encourage you along the way.

It’s essential to your success and survival as a medical student and doctor.

4. Find a Balance

Yes, you’re going to be running around crazy trying to turn in work and later, make it as a doctor. Be that as it may, you still need to create a balance.

Creating a balance means making time to eat, sleep, exercise, work, and spend time with loved ones. Whew — that’s a lot.

Do yourself a favor and create a schedule and stick with it. Yes, there will be times when you’ll have to pull an all-nighter. But do your best to follow through with a schedule so you can keep your sanity.

Finding a balance, especially right now, is vital!

5. Be Thankful

Even though there are going to be challenging times, choose to be thankful. It’s up to you to look at the big picture and not just focus on today.

You’re bound to go through some rough patches. All the same, focus on your goals and follow through with them.

Remember that your self-worth is not defined by what a patient or another doctor thinks about you. And, you shouldn’t base it on whether a loved one is offering support.

Remain thankful that you have the skills to make it through. You’re healthy, and your goals are to help your patients stay healthy. That’s fulfilling in and of itself.

You can do it!

As you navigate medical school, your residency, and becoming a doctor, don’t give up. Look for happiness and choose to remain happy, no matter the circumstances.

Deciding to be happy may take work, and that’s okay. Be aware of what is pushing you over the edge, and stay on the correct path.

As we mentioned, surround yourself with supportive people, and stay positive. These are a few ways to remain happy and find success!

Stay true to who you are, and everything should fall into place.
