INTERVIEW: Tina Schlieske

Hi Tina, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I have been ok…I’m not going to lie, being a musician during a pandemic has it’s downside…I don’t want to complain too much, there are people who are suffering far worse then I during this time but the uncertainty of when we get to do live music again has been really difficult…it’s just such a strange feeling not knowing when we will be able to play ‘live’ again…

Can you talk to us more about your new single Dear Harvey’s “What Would You Pay”?

Yes, it’s the song that came when Krista asked me to contribute something for the #MeTooMpls project…she asked that the songs be specifically about the Me Too movement…there are some very moving songs on this subject already so it was really important to me to find yet another voice to add..

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well I was feeling a little stuck with trying to write something…like I said I wanted to offer another perspective somehow…when I sat down and was researching even further on the Me Too movement I came across Jessica Mann’s statement she read out loud to Harvey Weinstein in court…I was really moved by it…it was incredibly sad as well as incredibly brave…even though what he did to her is permanent, nothing will take that away but she found her true strength by how she chooses to live her life now and who she chooses to be…

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

I would love to…so yes, there may be something…

How was the recording and writing process?

Of course I waited until the last minute to finish the song so there was a bit of a scramble to get it recored but everything just fell into place…itwas surprisingly easier to get it finished than I thought it would be considering we were in lockdown and I’m in California and the project was in Minnesota…Matt Patrick at The Library Studio in Minneapolis did a majority of the production/recording/mixing for the album helped me out with the production of my track…he was great to work with.  And Jake Slichter of Semisonic wrote the string arrangement for the song which was amazing…Jake is so talented and it was a thrill to get to work with him on that song.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – if so how’s that coming along?

I would love to do a new record…I have quite a few newand unfinished songs that I would like to get out there…plus I have been feeling that itch to do something but I have been finding it hard to focus on writing new stuff…the world is just so full of anxiety right now that sometimes the process of writing feels too introverted and cut off from what is happening…I tend to go into my own little world when I write and right now it doesn’t feel right to go ‘away’ so I’m just biding my time and when it feels right, I will do it…

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m hoping in the next month or so I will have a better idea about a new album and a release date…

How did you start working with #MeTooMpls project?

Krista Vilinskis asked me to get involved…Krista and I go way back so I was very excited when she asked me me to do something…I knew it was going to be good…

Why did you join the #MeTooMpls project?

As a woman, thelikelihood that you have been affected by some sort of misogynistic behavior, sexual discrimination or worse yet, some sort of sexualassault is quite high so I felt it was really important to get involved with this…I felt honored and humbled to be a part of such a large collective of women/non-binary songwriters all contributing their unique voices…I love showing the strength in unity and plus I will always do whatever I can when it comes to helping with a woman’s right to choose and raising funds for organizations like Planned Parenthood…

Can you tell us more about #MeTooMpls project?

Just to say thanks to all that have purchased the album and tuned into the live stream events…keeping people engaged and aware is how we can make the change that we need so much…

How has this #MeTooMpls compilation and live streaming experience been for you? Rewarding?

It’s been incredibly rewarding…I felt like I got to know other up and coming Minneapolis artists that I may not have gotten theopportunity to meet…

Besides attending your #MeTooMpls national release live stream on Nov. 6th – how else can people help?

Stay engaged…

What else is happening next in Tina Schlieske’ world?

Other than trying to survive this pandemic, I’m just trying to stay positive, healthy and sane…
