Alt-pop songstress WENS shares a pair of new tracks entitled “giant bat” and “sad sad” today. Listen to “giant bat” and “sad sad”HERE.
Building out her immersive world, she thematically connects these two lo-fi explorations of long distance romance with accompanying animated visuals. “giant bat,” produced by Dijon serves as “Part I.” Stark acoustic guitar coasts underneath her delicate delivery, while she admits, “I’m so lonely, without you here holding me.” The animation follows an equally lonely and listless frog on an Alice In Wonderland-esque trip brought to life by strokes of warm watercolors. As her first official co-production, “sad sad” expands the story with “Part II.” The amphibious protagonist finds solace in sleep, self-care, and sunshine as airy synths and guitar ring out underneath tear-drenched vocals.
WENS detailed the vision and vibe: “i wrote ‘giant bat’ when i had been in a long-distance relationship for over a year and was questioning whether it was worth all of the highs and lows. when it was good, it was absolutely amazing, and when it was bad, it felt completely soul crushing. it was this conflicting cycle to be in cuz i thought, why would i let go of something that makes me so happy? but also why am i only this happy half of the time?”
She went on, “i wrote ‘sad sad’ the last day of march 2020. my relationship at the time completely relied on our ability to travel, so when the travel bans kicked in, i had this really strange moment where i was sitting in my room starting week 3 of quarantine wondering if i’d ever see this person again. this feeling in my gut kept telling me that this was the beginning of the end for us. the song poured out of me in like 20 minutes and, as bad as it hurt me to write, it also felt like a warm hug during a really isolating time. i knew that so many people in the world had to be going through something so similar.”
