The Fey are here with another great single “Back Home To You”, off their upcoming album “Palm Tree Shade”, and we here at VENTS are excited to give the exclusive premiere. “Back Home To You” personifies what The Fey do absolutely best, their blend of indie rock and R&B is is somehow futuristic yet retro at the same time, a nod to 70’s soul and 80’s LA-chic, while keeping the modern low-end and production on full display. The instantly catchy bass line builds the track up into some bold atmospheric guitar work that welcomes you into their unique vision of future soul; think of this as a mix of Childish Gambino fronting The Neighborhood, but with a hint of Prince and Bowie sprinkled in. The track is one of a kind and the band is clearly destined for more great hits on the horizon, stream “Back Home To You” and read our exclusive interview with The Fey below!
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thank you. We’ve been crazy busy, and now freezing our butts off here in Nebraska… But we’re good!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Back Home To You”?
Let’s do it.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
A specific event? Not necessarily. I’ve bumped my head so much with relationships, once I got over the insecurities of being vulnerable, the words just came pouring out of me. Definitely got to give praise to my dedicatedly forgiving lady and the birth of my first son for aiding the release of such vulnerability. When you built yourself up as this “wild wolf” it’s not easy opening about all the flaws, obsessions, and insecurities you withhold… I know there’s someone out there to relate.
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Yes, for sure! Our last video for our summer single “Tear It Off” was a banger, and really set the bar high for any future videos from The Fey. So, we had no choice but to link up again with the ever so talented Perica Tomic and began producing another, even BETTER, animated video for “Back Home To You.” We’ll definitely let you know when things are ready to hit the streams.
How was the recording and writing process?
With this entire project being inspired by the city of LA, this record is one that sits really special to me. Not only due to its “open journal” subject matter, but because the composition began with myself and bandmates John and Michael at an Airbnb in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. We were even lucky enough to have all our gear there from home. While the rest of us hop on a plane, our guitarist Michael drove 1500 miles, gear packed in his SUV for us to create together as a band. It was definitely an amazing experience . After the retreat, I took things back home and gave it that retro-synthwave production I felt it needed to fit the entire album. From there our engineer/co-producer Dylan Parker got his hands on it and painted the final “contemporary-eighties” overlay. We’re pumped for it, and really hope everyone enjoys it.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
So yes, expect a full album. Our first full length LP, to be exact. It’s nearly 2 years of producing, composing, and arranging music like I used to before I formed The Fey… Electronically. Electronic, contemporary production with a vintage/retro vibe. A shift from the classic rock-soul most only “thought” they knew us as. But we felt it was time for a change of energy, and totally know folks will have a lot of fun with this project.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
We’re in the final stages of mixing the album right now. Our co-producer/engineer Dylan is probably tired of me nitpicking things every other day. Haha. If I can find peace from the nitpicking and stay on track, we’re planning to release our first full length, “Palm Tree Shade”, mid March 2021. Very excited to be releasing this album alongside our Kansas City friends from The Record Machine. Our last project release with them really helped get our feet wet… Hoping “Palm Tree Shade” gets us diving into the ocean.
What else is happening next in The Fey’s world?
Fey world is just constantly full of creating. If me and the guys aren’t working on new music, I’m dipping into graphic design, video production, etc. That being said, just the other day I think I finally got that new music spark again, and plan to start putting together some brand new ideas here soon. Just expect not to expect what you think you expect from The Fey. Haha!
