Hi KYLO, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been pretty chill, considering everything that’s going on in the world right now. Just laying low, working on music, catching up on movies, having a glass of wine or 10. Haha!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Undertow”?

Ya! I’m super pumped to finally have this out! I wrote the demo for “Undertow” in June and tweaked it a bit all summer until it finally got to where I wanted it. It’s a track about the woes of being with someone you basically can’t stand being around anymore, and feeling like you’re drowning, a.k.a. ‘in the undertow.’

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not really for this song. In the past I’ve definitely written some of my songs pulling from direct experience. But this one, I was sort of putting myself in other people’s shoes, and thinking back on some personal stuff. So actually, I would say a bit of both.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

The video is also out on my YouTube channel!

How was the recording and writing process?

Ya, so I got the instrumentals from one of the producers I work with and wrote a bunch of melodies over the instrumentals until I was happy with something. From there, pretty much just went into the studio to track, edited some of the lyrics with my co-writer, and finished it off.

What role does Toronto play in your music?

Well, I mean I guess technically it doesn’t really. But if you think about it, everything I do and experience is in this city, so it’s definitely a part of me whether I realize it or not. From the dive bar I met a guy at, to the drunken taco stand visits at 3 AM. It’s all a part of my experiences and I love this city for sure.

With the great reception your previous record you’ve gotten – do you feel any pressure while putting this new music together or rather the opposite?

For sure I feel the pressure. It’s something I definitely struggle with when making music. Does this sound ‘KYLO’ enough, etc. But I’ve recently learned that at the end of the day, I’m making music because it’s what I love and want to do. So I’m trying to not care so much about any preconceived assumptions and just write what feels right in the moment.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Ya, so this release was just sort of a one-off single I put out. And now I’m locking myself away all winter to work on a bigger project. I’m thinking either a visual EP or a full album for release sometime in 2021. So it’s definitely going to be a bit, but worth the wait…hopefully, haha! In the meantime, I am looking to maybe release a collaboration of some sort, so artists hit me up!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No, that’s still all in the works.

What else is happening next in KYLO’s world?

I sort of already said it before, but I’ll be writing and recording my next bigger project all winter. Hopefully I will be doing another livestream this winter, and looking to put out a collaboration as well. Also, stay tuned for a live studio session performance of ‘Undertow’ coming next month!
