Audio Up, LAVA for Good Podcasts and Republic Records have partnered on a revolutionary new music podcast for the era of COVID-19: a sci-fi, synth-pop musical, with comedy twist. Titled Sonic Leap, this almost true story is slated for release early 2021 through iHeart Media, and follows the time travelling journey of real life LAVA Records/Republic Records recording artist Hero The Band. Forged in the hip-hop mecca of present day Atlanta, the four brothers who make up the group (Justin, Jerramy, DJ and Nick), form an experimental, 1980’s music outfit, steeped in the works of Depeche Mode and The Cure. Already feeling out of place amongst their musical peers, the band suddenly find themselves transported back to the actual 1980’s where they finally get their chance at stardom. Listen to the audio trailer HERE.
Sonic Leap re-invents the band discovery process for 2021; recreating what it feels like, not just to tour with a band, but to fall in love with that band for the very first time. Jason Flom, long known as one of the most enduring and risk-taking executives across the music industry and for Lava’s more recent success in the podcast space, is now partnering with Audio Up’s CEO, Jared Gutstadt (also deemed as Adweek’s 2020 Podcast Innovator of the Year and Podcast Producer of the Year), to turn podcasts into a platform for band discovery at a time when touring and live shows hang in the balance – launching Sonic Leap as the perfect conduit to discover an exciting story and great music. The successes of LAVA for Good Podcasts and Audio Up Media make for a truly revolutionary partnership. LAVA for Good Podcasts is best known for their hit Wrongful Convictionpodcast series, and Audio Up Media currently has two music podcast series in the top 10, with recent four-part musical HALLOWEEN IN HELL, which stars Machine Gun Kelly and 24kGoldn, featured on the front page of Spotify. The companies’ strengths and model to break Hero The Band through Sonic Leap are unique in the exploding podcast space.
Sonic Leap first came into fruition when Flom introduced Gutstadt to Hero The Band. “Jason arranged for me to meet the band in Atlanta and sit in on studio sessions. I was quickly inspired to create a rock and roll-style musical with the band. By leaning into the narrative of 2020, utilizing a hot new medium like podcasting, and with the rise of genre bending acts, we have an opportunity to do something no one else has ever done in the music space.”
“Jared came up with this model that allows our bands to tour virtually, marrying the intrinsically audio experience of the podcast medium with the world of music,” explained Flom. “It’s been super exciting for the band to create and introduce new music that acts as a soundtrack for the hugely entertaining story in the podcast.”
A new album with original music from Hero The Band will release through LAVA Records in conjunction with the Sonic Leap podcast, and will feature special collaborations. Sonic Leap will be distributed through iHeart Media, and is set for release next year through all podcast streaming platforms. Primary Wave is an investor in both LAVA and Audio Up Media, marking this collaboration as the beginning of their synergy in the podcast and music worlds. The scripts for season one were written by Audio Up’s Zach Selwyn in collaboration with Chris Case (C4 media).
