5 Ways to Keep Your Home Safe and Secure

No one wants to be the victim of vandalists and/or burglars or other people that access your property unauthorised. You simply don’t want them to touch your personal belongings and definitely not steal anything. But next to losing valuable belongings, burglary and vandalism also causes emotional damage. It impacts your sense of security in your own home; your safe haven. Therefore it’s very important that you take adequate security measures to protect your home from intruders. In this article, we tell you about 5 ways to secure your home.

  1.  Keep your doors and windows locked

It sounds logical, but not everyone closes their doors and windows properly. Burglars look for easy-access property, and an open door or window is definitely an easy entry. Our advice: lock your doors and windows whenever they’re not in use, even when you’re at home. If you leave the house, do not just close the doors and windows, but lock them properly! For example, with window pin locks or security hinges.

  1. Use motion-sensing lights outside

Have you heard about lamps that switch on when they detect movement? These so-called motion-sensing lights are a great way to deter burglars and vandalists. After all, thieves want to get in unnoticed. And when the lights are on, this is way more difficult. For example, locate a motion-sensing light right near your door and driveway.

  1. Keep valuable belongings out of sight

Be smart and store valuable belongings out of sight, especially if you’re away for a longer period. Even if you live in a nice neighborhood, never leave your (electric) bike or scooter outside without supervision. Lock these and other easy-to-grab items in the garage. Also don’t leave valuable things like laptops, phones and other electronics in plain sight (so not in front of a window). Use window treatments like curtains to stop passengers from inspecting your home.

  1. Update your locks and minimise access to your keys

Be mindful of who has access to your keys and consequently your home. A key is very easy to copy and before you know it, there are many keys floating around with strangers. Are any locks in your home damaged? Make sure to fix it asap.

  1. Install cameras and/or alarm system

A more drastic but very effective measure is installing a professional alarm system or security camera. Cameras deter burglars. In the case burglars do break in, advanced cameras such as Hikvision cameras record the incident in a detailed way, whether it’s day or night. A camera in combination with an alarm system even provides more security benefits. An advanced alarm system, such as the Ajax alarm systems (Dutch: Ajax alarm systemen), can detect fire, smoke, glass breakage, water, temperature and movements. The Ajax alarm system (Dutch: Ajax alarm systeem) sends you and the control room a notification if anything suspicious happens. In the case of a real burglary, you can respond adequately.
