The Growth Of Mobile Phone Usage & Mobile Apps

In recent years, the amount of time that people spend on their mobiles and smartphones has slowly been increasing. In today’s society, mobile apps are widely used for everything from sending emails, contacting friends and sharing videos, to ordering groceries, booking trips and much more. However, with mobile phone usage being so prevalent, many people might be unaware of just how much time they spend on their devices.

While some users might not be on their phones all the time, many have slipped into habits of regularly checking their phones throughout the day.

Research from Deloitte on how today’s students use mobiles found that almost a fifth of 18-24 year olds surveyed looked at their phones immediately after waking up in the morning. Out of this age group, 41% also said that they look at their mobiles less than five minutes before going to sleep on a night.

To help users better track their mobile phone usage, a few years ago Apple unveiled a new Screen Time feature with their iOS 12 software update for iPhone and iPad. The feature provides users with a summary of how users used their device. Users could obtain a deeper insight into how often they were on their screens and where their time was spent, whether it was on games, entertainment, social networking and more.

As mobile usage skyrocketed over the years, businesses have also been benefiting from their customers using mobile applications. Through social media apps or branded apps, customers and brands have been able to interact and communicate with each other quickly and easily through mobile devices.

Data from Ofcom’s Adults’ Media Use & Attitudes report 2020 highlights how adults are increasingly using portable devices for going online. Looking at media use for different age groups, 99% of each age group from aged 16- to 54 use a mobile phone. Out of these ages, there are also between 80-90% of users that have a social media profile. Whether it’s for virtual experiences, online shopping, or social media, businesses can easily target a much wider population who are regularly active on their phones every day.

Increased mobile usage has played a crucial role in the growth of mobile apps and also the mobile casino market too. Over the years, technological advancements for mobiles and tablets has led to online gaming becoming increasingly accessible for adult audiences. With jackpots, table games, and online slots available from a range of high profile brands such as LeoVegas, iGaming businesses can also reach their customers through mobile apps too.

With most available for free download in the iOS store, 18+ players have a selection of apps to choose from in the ‘casino’ category. These mobile apps often feature favourite classics as well as exclusive games and hold a variety of top slots from a range of providers. The increased use of mobile apps has helped online casinos connect with players and appeal to a demographic who are comfortable using apps for almost every aspect of their lives, including entertainment.

The growth of mobile app usage can be clearly linked to the increasing amount of time that people spend on their phones every day. Research by eMarketer from 2019, found that on average US adults spent around 2hr 45mins on their smartphone every day.

As many mobile users rely on a number of applications, it’s no surprise that data also highlights that 90% of smartphone time is spent using digital audio, video and social media, the main types of content that people consume. With over three billion smartphone users in the world right now, the number is expected to continue to grow rapidly in the coming years.
