Hi, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi guys and thanks for having me! I’m good as can be I guess. Corona is kicking us hard but I’m keeping busy and active in the studio. I love your site and its content!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Unhappy Birthday”?

Sure! I wrote this song on my actual birthday 4th March and I had the idea about making an anti-birthday anthem for those of us that don’t have that perfect happy birthday with their friends and cake and everyone taking care of them etc. I feel like this song resonates deep with my listeners because everyone can relate to that same feeling.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

To be fair, I kind of wrote it with a sprinkle from many events, some my own and some from friends of mine. The love theme of the song somehow runs through all of my records but I pull inspiration from many different events to create my themes and concepts. I’ve been down on my birthday before because of my own reasons, just like others have been down on their birthday before because they got socks instead of shoes. I feel the main inspiration for Unhappy Birthday is getting over whatever negativity arises and making the most of your big day no matter what!

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Absolutely. We just yesterday finished the edit and it should be up in a matter of days!

The video for your last single ‘Cereal’ looked amazing, and visuals are clearly important to you as an artist.

Thank you! They are and I’m really trying hard with the limited resources I have to create visuals that compliment my themes and ideas. I’m currently directing and producing my own videos, which is super fun but super challenging.

How was the recording and writing process?

On this one, just like every other song it was special and definitely an “ah-ha” moment. I was just ending my birthday night it was super late and I had a good few drinks and good food, so I was in a nice wavy mood. I normally pull out the guitar when I feel it like this. My good friend J pulled a mac out when he clocked I was on to something and helped me jot down the lyrics but it basically flew out of my brain faster than I could write it! Once we got the “Unhappy” spin and mood on it, it became an Oceans song. We had a very rough voice note only at which point I hit the deck. The very next day I took it to the studio and produced it with my own approach, no ceilings or borders and I had a lot of fun! I pulled in a few birthday samples, pulled out the electric guitars and even ended up getting a guitar solo on it like whatever! All in all the process was a good ol time!

That’s what I love about writing records for myself. When I write for others I love it too, but I have to confine and follow rules and think too much. With Oceans, I want to just do my own thing and my concepts and ideas will continue to need style changes and different identities. So I’m enjoying that ride.

With the major reception from your previous musical work – did you feel any pressure while putting this single together or rather the opposite?

Both. Pressure in the sense of the numbers of my previous work, but also relief and clarity because I’m finally making this brand ME. I’m producing it, writing it, doing the visuals and re structuring the business of it too. It feels amazing to be able to freely create and I’m so thankful for my die- hard fans who are embracing the new style and listening to what I have to say in my songs.

Does the new single mean we can expect more new material – how’s that coming along?

I have another 4 songs already scheduled and if I’m honest, some of the best work I’m sure I’ve ever done is coming right up! I’ve been in the studio constantly and the songs are all kind of there. I’m working on the videos and label side of things too so just getting geared up for 21!

Any tentative release dates or title in mind?

You can expect one more song and video this year. The name of the next song is “Rollercoaster” and I’ll be dropping the release date very shortly.

What else is happening next in Oceans’ world?

Well, the hustle never stops but I’m broadening the horizon of brand partnerships and have some epic announcements there to come plus I’m trying to get on the road towards next summer and visit some of my key cities to play some music and meet my audience. I’m really excited about that. I’ll be right here building and working until we next meet!
