INTERVIEW: Jarry Lee

Hi Jarry, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks for having me! I’m great, all things considered! I’ve had more downtime this year because of the pandemic, so I’ve been able to work on many more creative projects — everything from acrylic painting to writing and recording music.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hallelujah In 3-Part Harmony”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen is one of my favorites, and I wanted to add a more ethereal tone to the original melody by creating a multi-harmony vocal arrangement. I love exploring harmony because I’m a bit of a music theory nerd, and I’m sure I’ll continue incorporating 3-part and 4-part harmonies in future songs.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

No plans to make a music video for this one but I have a video on YouTube of footage taken while recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4NTuNFYoYQ

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing harmonies is a pretty painstaking task for me, so it took a while! Recording was easier. I mixed the track myself, and then Romano Erafficci mastered it.

What role does the UK play in your music?

I don’t think it has a major role other than that I did listen to a lot of UK bands growing up, so perhaps there’s a subconscious influence there.

With the major reception your music has gotten – do you feel any pressure while putting this song together or rather the opposite?

Music is still a fun passion for me and not my main career so I don’t feel too much pressure. I’m able to take the time I need to work on new projects.

You also have a large audience on social media – how does this influence your take and direction in your music?

My audience is mostly interested in pop, but the music I’m interested in creating in the future has indie rock and alternative influences. I suppose social media does make me feel pressure to focus on creating more upbeat melodies.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I’m working on writing and recording a new 3-part harmony arrangement piece at the moment, and then an album of original music.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Early 2021, hopefully!

What else is happening next in Jarry Lee’s world?

I’m also working on a couple of art projects as well (acrylic painting and experimental film), and designing products for an apparel brand and jewelry brand I plan on launching in 2021 or 2022 with my partner. The jewelry brand is called PSYCHO KITSCH, and aims to celebrate unconventional creativity.
