INTERVIEW: Zegee x Reemo

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Connect”?

(Zeggé) So with ‘Connect’ is just me and Reemo doing what we do best. The beat for the song was made by Ghosty (Producer) and when I heard it I couldn’t imagine myself not having a verse on the beat. Obviously, ‘Connect’ is a Drill track so it’s very raw and that’s what I think makes it stand out. Our song ‘Connect’ is self-explanatory in showing what we’re capable of.

Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?

(Zeggé) Just seeing the Drill scene thriving and thinking I can do something here with ‘Connect’. Another inspiration for me personally is the desire to be the best at what I do and the aim to take my sound to new heights unapologetically is what inspired me and still inspires me.

How was the recording and writing process?

(Reemo) The recording process was kind of up and down with difficulties throughout the song with trying to get it right but it was satisfying when it finally came together, as for the writing I think I wrote my verse at 4am randomly, I just caught a vibe and let it flow.

(Zeggé) I had the lyrics done in 2 weeks, after that I messaged Oscar Moose (Engineer/Producer) aka the Wizard who was at Soho Sonic Studios at the time for a studio session to get our previous song ‘Bang’ and then ‘Connect’ done. Reemo pulled up and wrote the initial lyrics in the studio after hearing the beat for ‘Connect’ for the first time. Then Reemo had a crazy session at 4AM and wrote new lyrics. After that we had ‘Connect’.

What role does London play in your music?

(Zeggé) London plays a big part, it’s my home city and for many other artists. London has a very big impact on my sound from the accent to the slang. And London is very multicultural so I’m gaining influences from people from different countries and cultures from around the world.

How has Skepta and Dave influenced your writing?

(Zeggé) I look up to Skepta and Dave a lot. Me Skepta are both from Tottenham so we really know what it’s like over here. In terms of writing, they both influenced me to say it how it is unapologetically and write about what’s around me. I feel like I’m misunderstood, but when the music gets released that’s when they’ll understand me better and understand that what we’re doing here is unquestionably Greatness Only.

(Reemo) Dave influenced me by showing it’s best to write what you know and what’s in your world around you, if you got anime references you wanna pen down do it the same with TV shows and other niches you believe you may only understand but there’s bound to be others that understand you. Skepta influenced me just by never missing honestly. The confidence that comes from his craft is something I aim for and the ability to pen a stream of consciousness effortlessly is something I aim for too.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

(Zeggé) Definitely, I’m working on so much more music to be released after ‘Connect’, even an E.P which you can expect that to drop sometime in 2021, I’ve got tunnel vision right now.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

(Zeggé) Just remember the title ‘UNO’.

What else is happening next in your world?

(Zeggé) What’s happening next in my world? We’re just going to have to wait and see.

(Reemo) Next is exploring new sounds and extending the catalogue also working with new people as well.
