INTERVIEW: Nostalgiaisfun

Indie rock songwriting and Shoegaze aesthetics seem to go together like PB&J, and Philadelphia-based artist nostalgiaisfun would make the perfect sandwich. Along with elements of Alternative, Dream Pop, Emo, and Lo-Fi, nostalgiaisfun creates a sound that’s unique yet accessible to the masses. Same goes for the subject matter of their songs; past relationships, growing up, mental health, and “pure nostalgia”.

They are now back with nostalgiaisfun with their latest single “Dreams In a Witch House”. The song was written over the course of the pandemic with the lyrics taking form in September with Fall and October on the horizon. It’s a cool marriage between a fairly-upbeat and atmospheric instrumental with spooky lyrics (yes, pun intended). From a musician’s standpoint, I like it when someone writes a song in a major key with lyrics like “Spells I’ve cast in the past – Have shown me when I’ll crash”.

While the lyrics give a vibe of the spookiness of Halloween, it’s meant to reflect on people that are in and out of our lives. Lyrics like “Wonder where you went and why did you leave – Laying on the floor while you’re crying with me” and “Kiss me on Halloween – Will you follow me” makes me think about those who I’ve connected with on deeper levels whether they’re still a part of my life or not.

Fall is an interesting metaphor to use in songwriting since Fall is the time of years where the weather is changing, leaves are falling, and the conclusion to another year being right around the corner. It’s a time of year that puts you in a mindset of reflecting what’s happened over the past year with memories from years ago creeping in. People in your life are like fall leaves; changing colors and falling from trees symbolizes people changing and weaving in and out of your life. Adding elements of Halloween makes it fun for the time of year while adding a twist on the relevancy of the lyrics.

nostalgiaisfun is really able to bring different musical elements and metaphorical songwriting that has a little something for people of varying music tastes with subject matter that’s relatable all across the board. Fall and Halloween are in the air while we grow as individuals with those who are around us, and “Dreams In a Witch House” brings all of that together.

We also get to talk more about the song and more!

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great, just trying to keep moving forward during some pretty hectic times.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dreams In A Witch House”?

I had always planned to release a song with this vibe/energy for october probably since the beginning of the pandemic but I just couldn’t get right up until maybe mid september so to tell you the truth there was a lot of pressure!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well I know a couple of people who are into WitchCraft one way or another and I always found it fascinating especially the astrology aspect of some of it. I’ve dated people who were especially into the astrology aspect of it and it’s just overall inspiring how peaceful and just open minded a lot of the people who pracitce it are.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Not for this track but I definitely want to do some sort of video for a song in the future If not by the end of the year then definitely 2021.

How was the recording and writing process?

The songwriting didn’t come as fast or as smooth when I first started writing this song. I wrote the riff around the end of April and I really liked it, it just gave off an Autumn vibe so I had already planned to release this in October way back then. I just couldn’t write any lyrics so I sat on the song until maybe late August and by then I was already working on like 2 other songs that I really liked so there was a lot of anxiety when it came down to what song I was going to focus on. Eventually I sat down and I was like “okay I’m gonna work on one song and one song only for this month and every month after” I realized that if I keep overworking myself I’m just gonna burn myself out faster. Once I started to seriously work on the record It all came really fast and I think I wrote and recorded the song within 2 or 3 days so that was kind of a learning experience for me and now I’m ready to just take it easy and focus on one song at a time.

How did the current pandemic situation influenced the writing on this record?

It didn’t influence this record specifically but I think that being inside all the time has definitely just improved my song writing all together. I feel like I’ve improved a lot through quarantine in all aspects even outside of music but I’ve definitely had a lot of time to experiment with and improve my music and song writing so it sort of helps me have at least one positive outlook on quarantine.

What role does Philly play in your music?

Philly is definitely an important factor in my music. The music scene is really cool and there’s a lot of bands that really inspire me that sort of blew up in a way like Modern Baseball or Marietta and then there’s just a whole bunch of other artist’s who are really amazing also. I wouldn’t say the city itself inspires me or plays a role in my music but I feel like I wouldn’t have the memories that I have here in Philly anywhere else and that plays a huge role in my song writing.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Definitely! The new music I’m working on is coming along really good and I can’t wait to put it all out! I’ve been experimenting with a whole lot of different ideas and just pulling little tidbits from different genres and blending them as much as I can. But I’m getting a lot of different ideas every day and I’m really excited for people to hear them.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet but I want to try and get a song or two out in November and definitely expect new music in December as well.

What else is happening next in Nostalgiaisfun’s world?

A lot of songwriting and new gear, I’m hoping to improve my sound for the new year and I’m preparing for my music to take a huge turn in 2021. Like I said I also want to get a music video out next year too so there’s a lot of planning going on in my world right now! But it’s all going to be worth it.
