Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Sweeter The Honey”?
Sweeter is the second single in a batch that I’m currently releasing. It keeps things simple, features my first ever recorded guitar solo, channels a personal mantra and speaks for itself. The music is written by Charley Ruddell and myself, and the video is by Bob Sweeney.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I finished writing Sweeter on the cusp of the 2018 midterm elections during a residency in the South of France. Nothing was sitting easy with me at the time and channeling that into the song felt like the right thing to do.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
The nature of this song has always been simple and we stayed the course for the video. I like to think if the song is texture for the ears, the video is texture for the eyes. Bob has such a good eye and is so easy to work with and I think as soon as we embraced the sort of tongue-in-cheek nature it fell into place pretty easily.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing the tune started with Charley, he had that infectious bass line and spelled out the original vision. Truly, it hasn’t changed much since inception. I had been sitting on the hook for a while, and keeping everything as simple as possible was kind of our game. Following that instinct kind of gives this tune a ‘greater than the sum of its parts’ identity.
What role does Brooklyn play in your music?
These songs were written during my last months in Boston and moved to Brooklyn last fall. Brooklyn’s impact on my music has also been compounded with the pandemic’s impact. More often now I feel like carrying my ideas to a farther — bringing elements to their fullest potential. I’ve always enjoyed embracing my environment in my songwriting and I think Brooklyn’s impact will only get more and more palpable.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
This tune is part of a series of singles I’m releasing. Aside from that I’ve had the chance to work on some brand new material in the last few months that I would say push the boundaries of what people have come to expect from me and I’m really impatient for that to fully form.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’ve been laboring over the word “caveat” and contemplating legacy and impermanence but other than that, no real title to sum it all up and no real timeline. Although, you can expect 3 more music videos in the coming months.
What else is happening next in Aubrey Haddard’s world?
Right now I’ll be spending lots of creative energy on these videos and trying to stay safe. And seriously looking forward to being on the road again this coming Spring.
