It looks as if the Kevin Williamson penned Jim Gillespie directed 1997 slasher flick I Know What You Did Last Summer (based off of the 1973 Lois Duncan novel) will be joining a host of horror brethren who have made the film to TV transition such as Psycho, A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Omen and Williamson’s own creation Scream, becoming an honest-to-Pete ongoing television series.
According to the Ghouls and Ghoulies over at the haunted Hollywood Reporter, the television iteration of I Know What You Did Last Summer will be coming to the streaming gents over at Amazon courtesy of the talents of Sara Goodman. Goodman is known for her stints on such shows as Preacher and Gossip Girl and she will be writing and producing the new show.
For those late to the monster mash, I Know What You Did Last Summer revolved around a group of teens who accidentally run over a man on a desolate road late one summer night. Fearing for their futures, the teens dispose of the body and set about pretending that nothing ever happened. One year later, they begin receiving messages from someone unknown telling them that he – or she – knows what they did the summer previous. This simple setup rolled in right behind Wes Craven’s Scream, which reignited the so-called slasher film craze, and became a huge box office hit, spawning numerous sequels, all of varying quality.
In a statement about the impending film to television adaptation, Jason Clodfelter – Sony Pictures TV Studios co-president – said that they were “thrilled to have I Know What You Did Last Summer with our incredible partners at Amazon Studios. Neal Moritz and Original Film’s development consistently fires on all cylinders and that is proven once again with Sara Goodman’s contemporary and pulsating character weaving suspense thriller.”
Not to be outdone in the accolades department, Albert Cheng C.O.O. and co-captain of television at Amazon chimed in, too: “The best horror franchises always have another scare coming, and this I Know What You Did Last Summer series from Sara Goodman is a perfectly twisted update to the iconic slasher movie. Any way you slice it, our global Prime Video customers will love this modern take on the fan favorite film.”
Also taking a stab (see what I did there?) with executive producing honors for I Know What You Did Last Summer are Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear, James Wan and Rob Hackett. And, to prove that you can never have too many chefs in the horror kitchen, Shay Hatten and Original Film’s Moritz and Pavun Shetty and Erik Feig will also be joining the executive producer party.
