SINGLE REVIEW: Kundalini Rising by Iluminative

Australian rapper, singer-songwriter and producer Iluminative has just dropped the title track from his ground-breaking album, Kundalini Rising. The Byron Bay based music artist has reached a creative high-watermark with this new release, an exhilarating blend of rap, hip-hop and rock that features echoes of 90s rap, an undeniable lyricism and a breathtaking convergence of spirituality, grit and sublime self-assuredness. Throughout a ten-year career, Iluminative has featured on mainstream and online radio stations across the globe. With four albums and eight mixtapes under his belt, this multi-faceted artist has his sights firmly set on the next level with Kundalini Rising. Expansive in scope and aural ingenuity Iluminative’s new track explores themes of identity, spirituality and self-awareness with startling vitality and compelling dexterity. The track opens with an unassuming key sound but soon explodes into a rap blast, featuring a strident hip-hop beat and Iluminative’s rapid-fire but intelligible and poetic rhymes and lines. The song progresses into the chorus which is augmented by a layer of pulsating rock guitar affirming the searing positivity of the track’s subject matter. As Iluminative has said about the song’s origins: ‘It is about Kundalini rising, an ancient spiritual practice of rising energy through the whole body. This awakens what our ancestors called the sacred snake in our energy and physical body. This leads to knowledge and awareness beyond the physical five-sense perception. This is one method to wake up our energy and embody a higher consciousness.  My song is also about my personal experience of this happening but in an entertaining way’. This personal experience has been transformed into a hypnotic musical narrative and one which will no doubt strengthen Iluminative’s fan base as well as help extend his reach into the mainstream. Kundalini Rising is an accessible track that adopts the tropes of several styles to become an unforgettable listening experience.
