INTERVIEW: Kid Brunswic

Hi Harry, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been good, I’m currently working on releasing my next single and I’m enjoying the reception that “4AM” has been given. At the moment, I’m very good.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “4am”?

Yeah, of course. I wrote that song over a period of a few months. I wrote the guitar hooks and the guitar part while I was in rehab and I finished the rest of the song when I got out and was still sober. “Cigarettes and Sex” is the main lyric because that was the one thing that was keeping me sort of sober at the time. I eventually relapsed because I wasn’t focusing on myself and I was using cigarettes and sex as a distraction to help me get through all the pain I was experiencing.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yeah, I guess getting clean and trying to find a new way of live without the usage of drugs and alcohol.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes, video is out today!

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process started when I was in treatment for drug addiction and the rest of it came when I record most of the song after. I recorded most of the song on iPhone (the claps, snare, a lot of the drums, guitars). All recorded in a DIY set up in back of my garden. The writing process just came naturally over a period of three days, going back into the lyrics and then three months later I had all the parts of the song and arranged them into a structure that I really liked which is what “4AM” ended up being!

What role does the UK play in your music?

Not much. I take inspiration from different bands, not really scenes or cultures. I’ve never really been part of a scene or culture. I’ve always done my own little thing. If anything, I’m more inspired by fashion in the UK rather than in UK music.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah! I’ve got a new song coming out, it’s called “Bipolar Rhapsody”. It’s basically a grunge version of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. I’m not comparing it to the song…that’s probably the best song ever written. But if my song comes anywhere close as being half as good as that, I will be very happy.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

“Bipolar Rhapsody” in about 3 or 4 weeks!

As someone who enjoys diving deep into philosophy – what are some of the themes you will be exploring?

I’m reading a book at the moment by Eckhart Tolle The Power of Now, that’s something I definitely want to explore with my music. Trauma and pain and the different coping mechanisms

Music is a sort of healing process in some ways…listening back to something I’m proud of, really helps me take a backseat perspective. I’m still learning to love myself which is something I talked about in ‘We Surround Ourselves With Chaos”. The main theme for the song is the words that keep repeating throughout the mixtape. “I don’t hate myself, I love myself”

Learn other human beings in the process.

Would you call this material a lighter or much darker take than your previous material?

I don’t know if it’s lighter or darker, but I think it sounds better. It’s more direct, it kinda slaps you in the face a little bit more.

What else is happening next in Kid Brunswick’s world?

It’s funny you say Kid Brunswick’s world and I’m creating something in my head that is called Kid Brunswick world. Can’t say anything else other than it’s called Kid Brunswick World. Other than that, going to shoot a video for “Bipolar Rhapsody” and then another song coming out and then another song coming out. You can expect a lot more new music and hopefully, people will connect to new songs that come out like they’ve connected to the previous ones. I don’t know, but I’m pretty excited.
