Hi Bryonii, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! I’ve been good, thanks. Working through lots of changes, like so many of us of late, but feeling positive!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cold Feet”?
I’ve always loved this track. I originally wrote it as a ballad for my producer friend Zaflon. He then reworked it and released it with a feature from a super talented rapper called Lefty. Its’s now been given a third lease of life as the Obsidian Cane remix. I never imagined it would be a Garage vibe, but it works so well. I also really love the other tracks on the EP and feel very honoured to be involved in the project.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was more about a particular person than an event. I was dating someone who was successful in business, but also quite materialistic and cold emotionally. He messed with my head a lot, but eventually I realised that he was just wired that way, and that we’d never see eye to eye. Classic narcissist/empath stuff!
Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?
Good question… No plans at present, but I have invested in a course to brush up on my video editing skills, so maybe down the line it’ll happen.
How was the recording and writing process?
The vocal you hear is actually the original GarageBand demo that I recorded in my bedroom. The song just fell out of me, there weren’t too many revisions. So this was a very organic track, a raw expression.
What was it like to work with Obsidian Cane and how did that relationship develop?
We’ve been working together for quite a few years and are good friends now. We both like experimenting with genres, and this has led to us writing together for other artists. He has such a great attitude – that’s so important when collaborating as it makes the whole experience much more fun.
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
I try to be as respectful as possible the collaborating with other artists. It’s a fine line, as you also have to have your own boundaries and be comfortable with how you’re being represented. As a singer and topline writer I’m usually collaborating at some level as I don’t create my own instrumentals.
How has the current pandemic situation influenced your writing?
It’s made me reevaluate how I spend my time. I’ve realised I want to make more space for writing moving forwards, and I’ve been investing in my home studio set-up. We’re all working remotely now, and I want to be as self-sufficient as possible when creating tracks at home. Despite what the government may say, we all need art more than ever, and I feel as though there will be a huge artistic revolution in response to all the current restrictions and hardships we are experiencing as a collective.
What role does the UK play in your music?
A lot of my musical influences stem from movements that were born in the UK – Trip Hop, UK Techno… It’s not something I’m overly conscious of, but it’s definitely engrained in me somehow. Working with UK producers as well – Obsidian Cane was heavily involved in the first wave of 90’s UKG, that golden era, and those influences run through his blood!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! I have another release incoming on UK label Concrete Kin. Very excited about this one.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Hopefully this year, but I’m gonna have to say watch this space… Things are still W.I.P.
What else is happening next in Bryonii’s world?
I have a few new producer collabs in the pipeline, so I’m interested to see what manifests from those. After releasing a vinyl LP with producer Steven Rutter earlier this year, we’re also thinking about what’s next for us as a creative pair – we really enjoy working together and the album was well-received.
I also have a few writing projects with Obsidian Cane that I’m really grateful to be working on.
Other than that, I’m just trying to ride the Covid wave, stay sane and keep on creating.
