INTERVIEW: Teen Creeps

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, we are good. We’ve been happy with the response to our new single so far.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Seeing Shapes”?

It’s the opening track off our new album ‘Forever’. We decided to release it as a first single because it bridges the gap between our debut and the new record. It’s fast-paced but also pretty melodic, offering a nice taste of what’s to come.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Musically, we wanted to write a song that’s fast and slow at the same time. You know? Lyrically, it’s about coming to terms with the ups and downs of life. Finding peace, even though you know there’s always going to be good and bad stuff. And making the best out of it.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Two guys followed us around for a day when we were playing an indoor festival last year. They shot the whole thing on VCR, which gives the video a lo fi aesthetic that really suits our music. Also, it takes you back to a time when live music was still a part of everyday life. Hopefully we can go back to those times again really soon.

How was the recording and writing process?

We recorded the album with our long time friend Jesse Maes. He recorded our early stuff and knows the band through and through. That made him an obvious choice. We went to a really nice studio just across the Dutch border and recorded everything live, like we always do. But we approached the whole process more critically, with more attention to detail. Especially because some songs are slower, it’s less of a lo fi approach.

What role does Belgium play in your music?

A big one, because it’s where we live and operate from. It’s also the country we play the most shows in, obviously. But in terms of musical influence, much less so. We are not part of a big scene or something. There aren’t even many bands doing what we do, genrewise.

What is it about the 90s that you find so fascinating?

It’s not a conscious thing. But there’s just a feel about a lot of records from that time that really hits a spot. They are often both melancholic, beautiful and powerful at the same time. Discovering bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Superchunk was like coming home for me.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album– how’s that coming along?

Yes, it does! The album has been ready for quite some time, but covid pushed the release date back. The new record is called ‘Forever’ and will be out January 22nd on PIAS.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

It’s definitive!

What else is happening next in Teen Creeps’ world?

Hopefully we can play normal live shows again soon, and come back to the UK. In the meanwhile we already started working on new stuff. Why not?
