A Five Step Plan to Choose a Successful Career

  1. Identify your Passion not profession

PV Sindhu plays badminton and so do many other girls. What sets her apart is her dedication, hard work and, the success and popularity that follows.

When one works on something that one likes, it does not seem like hard work. The long hours that you put in seem like fun. Not a task that you have to complete. In such situations, travelling for work is exciting. Add to that a good salary and what you have is your dream job!

Career tests are a good way to find / shortlist your passion. There are many free online career tests available that suggest courses for girls based on their interests and skills.

  • Start small. Start Free. Start Right Now!

Apart from what you learn in the classroom, online certificate courses is a good idea. Many websites offer entry-level courses for free. Choosing free online courses with certification is a good idea. They will add weight to your bio data when applying for jobs. As you learn these courses, you will also get an idea whether you really like the field you have chosen or not.  Most of these courses are free. So, it is risk free.

  • Internships and entry level jobs – Practical knowledge over classroom learning

Actual working in the field one likes, is a good way to build a career. Here there can be multiple options to choose. Internships in the companies or fields you like. Entry level jobs. Starting as a trainee.

All this will help you gain knowledge and understand how the industry actually functions. It will help you fine tune your career path plan. Working will give you a better idea of your strengths and areas where you may need to improve.

  • Do not be afraid to take risks – Jump careers

Confidence is the key. Do not be afraid to take risks. The first few years of college life and working, is a good time to experiment and explore different areas. It helps one understand what one likes to do to earn a living.

  • Be confident. And be ready to negotiate

Willingness to learn is all that is required to be successful. Your first few jobs or internships may not have everything that you want. Be confident and ask for what you want. You may not get everything. Be ready to negotiate. Decide what you want and what you are willing to let go. And go ahead and take up what you like!

Keep learning, building up your biodata simultaneously. Save a bit. Invest it in yourself – your grooming, comfort, travelling etc. Soon, sky will be the limit for you!
