Hi Josh, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! I’ve been good, filling my time in quarantine and putting some music together!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cheap Gold”?
I like to explain Cheap Gold as more of a list of reasons it should be a breakup song versus being an actual breakup song. The song was inspired by a friend of mine going through a rough patch but there are definitely nods throughout the song to my personal relationships and some other friends of mine.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Ohhh ya. I had the title in mind already but had not idea what to write about. And then I got a text from a friend telling me about something not-so-great their partner had done.
For someone who has never been cheated on (that I know of…), I write a lot of songs about cheating exes…
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
We filmed this over two days but the big day we got to film on a property that had a mini car junkyard. It was such a cool atmosphere (other than the bugs). I got to film it with a few friends and one of my sisters and it was just a fun time!
How was the recording and writing process?
This song actually took the longest out of all the new music to write. We recorded four different versions of the song before landing on the final demo which turned into the song that is now out. The way me and my producer work is I’ll come in with like three or four ideas per session and we’ll work on all of them throughout the session. Then between studio days, we’ll both make notes on the current demo on how to make it even better.
What role does Toronto play in your music?
I’ve been to SO MANY shows in Toronto and to say my first set ever was at the Mod Club is still surreal to me. Toronto is also important to me when it comes to writing. There is so much inspiration around you at all times it can be overwhelming and a few songs of mine definitely have lyrics that come from literally walking down Yonge or Danforth.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! We (myself and my producer Aaron Hutchinson) started the writing process with the idea of writing an EP. That plan lasted about 3 days. We finished an album in August and I have a couple more singles coming out before that.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
My next song, “You Seem Great” comes out mid October! And it’s VERY different from Cheap Gold. It was the first song we started working on back in January!
What else is happening next in Josh Tavares’ world?
Right now, we’re finishing up some visuals for some future releases. My favourite song I’ve ever written is coming out late this year and I’m very excited for people to hear it! And I may have already started writing the next project haha!
