INTERVIEW: Willow Raye

-Hi Willow, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey VENTS! Happy to speak to you! I’ve honestly been great. Staying busy during the quarantine working on new singles and video projects. Staying creative has been my solace during this time for sure

-Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Numb”?

Numb is my baby! It was the very first song I ever made as an artist! I first released it back in 2019, but wanted to bring it back with a feature, so I linked with Bobby raps and got him on the track to give it more vibes.

-Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I write most of my songs about crappy relationships I’ve gone through. This one in particular was about a guy who made me so emotionally confused that I got to a point where I stopped feeling all the emotions and feeling, well, numb. It’s about holding on to a relationship that maybe isn’t the best for you and not wanting to let go. Hence all the drug references. These types of relationships go through extreme highs and lows and once you get to that place of being mentally gone but still holding on, it’s almost like an addiction. But rest assured… I’ve moved on, but made a beautiful track about my experience!

-Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

No plans yet! But if the people want one, that’s what the people will get!

-How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process involved me writing really long verses at first and going to my engineer to slim it down and make it have more of a poppy groove. I overwrite sometimes and it was cool to get this take on my own writing. As this being the first song I ever made, the recording process was new to me! It was fun to learn and grow through this song and it really taught me how to find my voice and style I want to carry out as an artist.

-What was it like to work with Bobby Raps and what did he bring to the table?

Bobby Raps has been an artist I’ve always loved so getting him on the track was super sick for me! He definitely brought more of a grunge melodic take to the track which definitely took it up a notch. We did this during quarantine, so a lot of it was back and forth virtually.

-Do you tend to take a different approach when you’re collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Not necessarily, I’m pretty set in my ways as a writer but I think it’s a dope experience because you learn to come out of the box and see what other people have to bring to the table. But I tend to stick with my own creative vision and let people add on to my work. I think I do best as an artist when I have creative control.

-What role does LA play in the music you release/create?

Well dating is really hard out here. A lot of people are out for personal gain or selfish reasons, so I’ve gotten myself into not the best relationships in the past. But I use these experiences to write dope songs and let out my frustration in a healthy way that other people can relate too. I built a really great team in LA over the past couple years and I am so grateful to work with them.

-Does the new single mean we can expect even more new material – how’s that coming along?

Oh yes! This is just the start! I have my next singles dropping left and right. They are all something I’m really proud of and can’t wait to show the world. Numb sets the stage for my new releases because I am moving into a more alt/pop type style.

-Any teasers you can reveal for upcoming releases?

Follow me @willowraye on Instagram to keep up to date with my new releases! I have my next single “ADHD”dropping the 16th of October as well as “Never call you again” Oct 30th.

-What else is happening next in Willow Raye’s world?

I’m doing a lot of artwork for my singles in the next month. I have a lot of dope visuals coming out for each new single. I shoot everything on film or super 8. It’s a real vibe.

Once I release all singles, I’m planning to mesh them all into one super long track that tells a story. It’s gonna be epic. Stay tuned y’all!
