Ray Cardwell Delivers Roots-Inspired Spin on the Al Green Hit “Take Me To The River” [Exclusive Song Premiere]

For Bluegrass / Americana recording artist Ray Cardwell, the climb has been a lifelong journey which has led to the Missouri native creating quite the following since getting his start in the 1970s. Over the years, the singer/songwriter has cranked out multiple chart-topping hits, which has led to Cardwell firmly claiming his stake as one of the most consistent artists in the American Roots genre.

Ray Cardwell looks to take a life’s worth of experience as inspiration behind his upcoming album Just A Little Rain, available on September 25th via Bonfire Music Group. To celebrate the momentous occasion, he is excited to unveil a new cut “Take Me To The River” a day early. When listening, the recording may sound familiar to some music fans, as the track was originally recorded and released by Soul singing legend Al Green in 1978. Cardwell’s version takes a different approach to the song, delivering a unique Bluegrass / Americana edge like never before.

“I’ve always been such a fan of Al Green and his music. What a voice! I got this idea of playing this very rootsy with an acoustic groove. It all just kinda fell into place when we recorded it,” Cardwell tells Vents Magazine. “You gotta love how Al Green wraps it all up in this song. It can be about love, it can be spiritual or it can be about starting over.”

Getting his start performing regionally with The Cardwell Family in the Missouri Show-Me State, the collection of tracks were heavily inspired by the singer’s musical upbringing, which included stops at venues and bluegrass festivals throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, along with performing as a member of the critically-acclaimed band New Tradition in the ‘90s.

Just A Little Rain serves as the follow-up to the singer’s previous release Stand On My Own, which featured multiple chart-topping hits. The current project has already begun producing hits as well, with the current radio single “Born To Do” hitting Number One on the main Grassicana chart earlier this month. Other songwriters on the album include Louisa Branscomb, Daryl Mosley, Danny Roberts, as well as songs written by Rick Lang, Stephen Mougin, Rich Schleckser and John Dillon.
