INTERVIEW: Speaker Face

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Glad to be here! We’ve been swell, thanks for asking. Plenty of distant recording and writing these days, and lots of time for visual art as well.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Work Friends”?

Musically this track is a fun one for us. The gritty, harder hitting verses flow so nicely into the floating choruses, releasing that build up of tension in such a satisfying way. It really reflects the lyrical mood of the piece. I get to carry the listener through this transition with a fiddle solo as well and that always makes me happy.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No singular event, but a longer conversation with some of our close friends about the amount of energy we dedicate to our employment, and how much mental and emotional energy our work environments occupy outside of the job. I do remember the moment that I knew this was a bop, watching two pals in the crowd of a festival show that were clearly work friends. When we hit the chorus they couldn’t stop laughing and dancing with each other, completely proving the song wrong, and we loved it.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes! The video for this track is out now. We started filming this one in February in Toronto with all three of us. To contrast our static floating shots, I spent a few days filming these incredible honey bees in Vancouver and was just amazed at how well they acted for the camera. This video was a blast to edit.

How was the recording and writing process?

When we were writing this, Eric said “How about something repetitive, like a work day.” Within 10 minutes we had the chorus. Ruby sounds so great, and manages to make this super simple chorus completely engaging.  When I was writing the parts for the violins, I wanted a pulsing section that was part of the groove fabric, but also wanted it to stand out just a bit like a horn section. The lines came pretty naturally and really support the vocals.

What role does Canada play in your music?

Canada is an incredible place to make music. It has a thriving indigenous hip hop scene that’s as poignant as anything I’ve ever heard, many deeply rooted folk traditions, hyper creative producers and songwriters living everywhere from urban centres to absolute middle of nowhere. Living between Toronto and Vancouver, I feel inspired every night I go see live music. On top of that, there is a very supportive arts council that values experimentation and diversity. We love global influences in our music, but Canada isn’t short of cutting edge creators and a steeped musical history.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! The whole album “Crescent” drops October 9th. More videos to come as well.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We also have our final single “All My Mind” releasing at the end of September

What else is happening next in Speaker Face’ world?

Next, we’ve decided to take up balloon animals and needle point. It’s our true calling.
