INTERVIEW: B & The Hive

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey!! We have been doing well and staying productive during these “interesting” times.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Heart Beat”?

There is a strong sense of duality in this song that speaks to vulnerability while also being a source of strength. The lyrics span the full range of emotions from fear to excitement in what lies ahead. That is represented in the lyrics “I am terrified knowing things are gonna change” while also acknowledging, “I don’t wanna stay the same”. This speaks to the nature of life and it’s many cycles. The rhythm of the song represents the beating of a heart to propel the listener on a journey through the song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It was written during a period of growth for the band and it captured a feeling of melancholy about moving forward while also leaving the past behind. These songs are meaningful to us as they all came during a time of heartfelt reflection on where we are in life and where we want to go. Each of them has introspection as well as release.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

Yes!! We have done a music video for this track. We filmed this during the beginning of the quarantine lockdown in March and April. We did it all ourselves with our iPhones. We had some footage of the band playing that we incorporated since we couldn’t all be together to film it.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

The title Heart Beat really encompasses the heart based energy that runs throughout the songs. That is the vibe that we were feeling at the time of writing these songs and it comes through in the overall sound of this EP.

How was the recording and writing process?

Many of the tracks were written and recorded in our bedroom. The process was very organic building upon inspiration in the moment. With this EP being recorded and produced ourselves we were able to capture the essence of the songs as they were being created. It was liberating not having to go into a studio setting and re-create the energy and emotion that occurs naturally during the writing process. We are able to begin recording as the inspiration strikes and then bring in the band to make it all come together.

What role does San Luis Obispo play in your music?

The Central Coast is a beautiful place. We draw energy and inspiration from nature and the surroundings that we get to see and experience every day. We love where we live however we also enjoy touring and traveling and get a lot of inspiration from being in new places and meeting new people.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Through our travels, personal growth and reflection, as well as the evolution of the band, these songs were born. We feel these songs capture the spirit and general feeling of that moment in time.

What else is happening next in B & The Hive’s world?

We have been making the most out of these trying times. Having refined our home production we have been recording and writing more than ever. Since we have not been touring and on the road since March of this year, it has led to being very productive. As a result we have a lot of new material to be released in 2021
