Chicago-based hip-hop artist Matt Muse releases a new remix of “SHOTGUN [PHILIA]” featuring fellow Chicago-based rapper Femdot today alongside its accompanying video. Originally appearing on Love & Nappyness, Muse’s “powerful and deeply spiritual” (Bandcamp) 2019 EP, the track recalls his elementary and high school days and how “my different friendships from that time manifest in the love that I show to my friends today.”
“With Femdot’s most recent project being titled ’94 Camry Music (and him being my friend), it only made sense to get Femdot on the remix to talk about who he was riding with in his ’94 Camry, why, and what they were doing,” says Muse. Today’s remix updates the original with a new verse from Femdot, both he and Muse using their verses to “paint a picture of two young black men using their vehicles as a beacon of hope, freedom, and love for our ‘niggas,’ the day one friends who’ll build memories with you, look out for you, and get into trouble with you and take the blame before they snitch. And was truly an honor to have him on this track and in the video.”

Co-directed by Muse, Imaginat, Sensei Shutter and Oluwaseyi Adeleke, the video features Muse and Femdot (and a brief appearance from Muse’s nephew) surrounded by various cars. Muse explains:
“My vision for the video was to create a mostly performance based visual that highlighted my life-long love for cars. I’ve always wanted to have a music video with a bunch of nice cars in it, not to look flashy, but because I adore the craftsmanship and detail of luxury vehicles. With the help of my good friend and co-director Imaginat, we hoped to use the young kid playing with cars (my nephew MJ) to show that youthful fascination, then have him driving his big wheel truck next to the Tesla truck to show that fascination and hope to have one of these cars coming to fruition. With the pandemic looming, we tried to create something simple but beautiful, and I’m happy we achieved that goal with this video.”
