It may not be high season any more but that doesn’t mean that summer is over in September in Mallorca. In fact, it is actually one of the best times of year to visit: the resorts are slightly quieter as the schools have started back, but the weather is still hot hot hot! (Except for the odd spectacular storm that the island is famous for at this time of year).
Today we would like to give you some suggestions about how best to enjoy your holiday in Mallorca in September and we have chosen our top activities and things to do for you to check out. Here are our seven best things to do in Mallorca in September:
Outdoor Activities
If you are up for an adventure, then take The Challenge in Alcudia. It is a treasure hunt, multi-activity adventure in groups with a ride on a jeep, snorkelling, kayaking, coast trekking and cliff jumping. It takes place close to S’Illot Beach in La Victoria, one of the most beautifully rugged areas of Alcudia.
This is a fantastic experience and is suitable for all ages and abilities. And it is a lot of fun. You don’t need to be an athlete or anything but you should be reasonably fit and you MUST be able to swim. That’s the only requirement. You don’t need to bring anything with you other than a towel and a change of clothes as all the equipment is provided: wetsuit, snorkel mask, kayak, shoes to wear in the sea for where it’s rocky… The professionals who will be looking after you during the activity will also take photos throughout, which will be sent to you, so that you don’t have to bring your own camera. The Challenge activity takes place every day in the month of September.
Sail on a Catamaran in the North of Mallorca
As mentioned above, the weather is still fantastic in Mallorca in September, so an absolute must while you are on holiday is to join a catamaran tour. There are different catamaran excursions operating from different parts of the island but our favourite is the Anacaona Catamaran tour from Alcudia because the scenery on this part of the coastline is spectacular and because this catamaran is the largest on the island and so they are able to offer more net space and deck space to relax on and also they are able to take more water “toys” for the customers to play with, such as kayak, stand up paddle boards and snorkel equipment.
The catamaran tour departs from Puerto Alcudia at 10am and lasts for five hours. With the gentle breeze on your face you will sail along the coastline of Alcudia Bay as you leave the port area and head towards Aucanada, where you will have a wonderful view of Aucanada’s islet and lighthouse. You will pass the Cape of Menorca and sail by Es Coll Baix; one of the most stunning coves on the island (just check your guidebook if you don’t believe us). Then you will sail for a while on the open waters, as you leave Alcudia Bay and cross over onto Pollensa Bay. The catamaran will drop anchor at the other side of Pollensa Bay at Cala den Gossalba close to Formentor. This is a magnificent cove with fabulous views where you will have time to use the snorkel equipment, kayaks or stand up paddle boards or just to swim in the crystal clear Mediterranean Sea while the crew prepares your lunch, which you will eat on board the catamaran.
On the way back to port you’ll stop for a last refreshing dip at Aucanada: that beautiful spot you passed in the morning with the islet with the lighthouse.
Dolphin Watching and Sunrise in Mallorca
If you don’t mind getting up early, make sure you book yourself on a dolphin watching boat tour in Mallorca. You will not regret it. You will get to see real life wild dolphins in the sea jumping, swimming and playing. This is a completely eco-friendly tour and you are kindly requested to respect the wildlife at all times. That’s why you will not be permitted to swim from the boat on this tour.
The best dolphin watching boat excursions leave before dawn so that passengers can witness a spectacular sunrise from the boat as well as the joy of seeing the dolphins. Plus, this is the best time of day to spot wild dolphins in the Mediterranean as this is when they are most active. When you book your sunrise and dolphin watching boat trip, have in mind that the best departure ports for the sunrise are those that face east, such as Puerto Pollensa, Puerto de Alcudia and Cala Ratjada.
The boat trips for dolphin spotting tend to last around three hours and normally included coffee and croissants or a similar breakfast snack.
Calo Moro Boat Tour
If you fancy a day at sea in Mallorca, one of the nicest boat trips is the one that goes to Calo des Moro and departs from the pretty Cala Figuera Harbour. On the boat trip you will see the spectacular cliffs forming part of the coastline, the karstic rock formations, caves used years ago by smugglers, and sea quarries. This is a unique opportunity to explore the coast and to discover all the hidden corners of Calo des Moro. Some of the gorgeous views you’ll have on this day out are:
- Cala Santanyí and es Pontás, a great natural rock formed like a bridge which has a spectacular view from the sea.
- Cala Llombards and sa Cova d’es Fum, passing by es Caló d’es Macs.
- The famous cove of Caló des Moro with its crystal clear waters turquoise in colour, the envy of the best beaches in the world.
- S’Almunia, a small and charming cove with its typical fishermen’s huts.
- Es Marmols Beach, to which it is only possible to reach by boat or by making a long trek, which is not ideal in the summer heat. Here we will make a 30-minute stop for swimming.
You’ll get to swim at Calo des Moro as long as it’s not jellyfish season (the crew will inform you and may suggest a swim elsewhere instead). And one of the highlights of the trip is the boat itself: an inflatable speedboat that takes you bouncing over the waves between the different sights.
Visit the Caves of Hams
You’ve heard that Mallorca has many caves and that some are open to visitors, but have you heard of the lesser famous Caves of Hams? These are the caves that we recommend for you to visit on you holiday to Mallorca as they are not as busy as the nearby Caves of Drach.
The visit to the Caves of Hams consists of a guided tour inside the caves with a local expert who will give you information on the way round about the history and formation of the caves and about the stalactites and stalagmites. There is a light show inside the caves, which is spectacular, showing the interior of the caves in a unique and atmospheric way.
You can combine your visit to these caves with an afternoon in the pretty fishing town of Porto Cristo nearby. You can take your swimming things and spend some time on Porto Cristo’s beach, you can stop at one of the cafes for lunch or you can stroll around the harbour in the sunshine. If you have a car, you can visit some of the beautiful coves nearby, such as Cala Mandia, which offers some of the most beautiful views in Mallorca.
Trekking in Mallorca in September
How do you feel about adding a tough but not too long hike to your list of top fun things to do in Mallorca? Now that the temperature has dropped a little after the storms at the end of August, it’s time to get off the sun bed and get those trekking shoes out.
There are several hills that you can walk up to enjoy amazing views of the island and its coastline and countryside. Top routes for us are:
- Puig de Bonany just outside Petra, from where you can enjoy some of the best and widest views of the countryside and the bay of Alcudia. At the top of the hill is a pretty impressive chapel that you can enter. You could spend the rest of your day in the gorgeous village of Petra, which is steeped in history and has a few great spots for lunch.
- Puig de Magdalena. The Puig de Magdalena is just outside Inca in the countryside and from the top of the hill you have 360º panoramas of practically the whole island. There is a church at the top that you can visit and there is a huge picnic area with barbecue stations that you are free to use (check first with the local authorities as sometimes they are out of bounds due to high risk of fire).
- Atalaya in Alcudia. If you really fancy a challenge then visit the La Victoria area of Alcudia for some of the most beautiful scenery and several wonderful routes. The most challenging is the hike up to the Atalaya (to the top of the biggest hill – it’s well signposted) but there are other hikes around the same area also with splendid views, such as the Penya del Migdia. You could take a picnic and have it at S’Illot Beach and cool off in the clear waters after your exertions or you could stop at one of the restaurants on your way back into Alcudia such as Cocodrilos fish restaurant, 5 Oceanos chill out restaurant or Bodega del Sol.
- Puig de Maria in Pollensa. For incredible views of the north coast and mountain area, hike up the Puig de Maria just opposite the old town of Pollensa. The views are simply breathtaking and there’s a very rustic restaurant at the top where you can get a typical Mallorcan pa amb oli. If you’re still feeling energetic when you get back down to Pollensa, one of the highlights of the town is to trudge up the 365 Calvary steps to the chapel at the top. From there you’ll have a wonderful view of Pollensa and back across to the Puig de Maria.
Fun fact: “puig” means “hill” in the Mallorquin dialect.
Horse Riding on the Beach
Saddle up and ride in Mallorca at Rancho Grande, where they offer an excellent horse riding tour from their huge ranch, through the property and to the beach close to Son Serra de Marina. You will also have some time to ride on the sand dunes close to the beach. The views across the bay of Alcudia are magnificent from here and the experience is totally unique. After all, where can you ride on an enormous private rancho in a fantastic climate in the countryside and on the beach?
The whole experience lasts two hours and is available every day in September. Experienced riders are welcome and will be able to head off with an expert monitor but horse riding experience is not necessary to enjoy this activity and beginners are well looked after. This excursion is perfectly suitable for children too.
Rancho Grande is a big working farm as well as horse riding school and you can wander around the ranch to look at the pigs, donkeys, ostriches and parrots. Plus they have a great restaurant where you can have a hearty cowboy meal as you look across the Mallorcan plains.
