CD REVIEW: Undiscovered by Ludovico Einaudi

Undiscovered is the new collection of songs, personally selected by the world’s biggest streaming classical artist Ludovico Einaudi. It spans more than 25 years of music creation.  This remastered double album features music from Einaudi’s extraordinary catalogue, revealing previously hidden pieces from across 9 albums. It includes tracks from his many collaboration projects including Taranta, Diaro Mali and Cloudland, solo albums Eden Roc, I Giorni & Una Mattina, live performances from Berlin & La Scala, Milan, a magnificent vocal version of his most popular track Nuvole Bianche, many more tracks that have never had a full release and a previously unreleased track. As Ludovico Einaudi says about the new collection, ‘For me it was nice to look back, brush up my memories, being surprised and somehow rediscover myself, and compose a new necklace made of stones of my past’. And what an amazing past it is. The album begins with the Fuori Dal Mondo, one of the many sublime pieces presented here, the full spectrum of Ludivico’s wide-ranging expertise and creative power on show. The version of Al di là del Vetro – Live at Arcimboldi Theatre, 2003 is particularly delightful, as is, of course, the vocal version of Nuvole Bianche, one of the many highlights of this outstanding collection. The ground-breaking composer’s music has been described in many different ways including minimalist, ambient and contemporary classical but as this selection of tracks reveals, his style defies pigeon-holing. Ludovico began his career as a classical composer and went on to integrate other styles and genres into his works, including folk, pop, rock, and world music. As Ludovico Einaudi explained, ‘There is something in it that comes from classical, but I have influences from different music I have experienced in my life, from African music to folk and rock’. He often tops the charts globally and is now the biggest streamed classical artist of all time. Ludovico Einaudi has released 14 studio albums including his ingenious avant-garde project Seven Days Walking (2019). Additionally, he has digitally released 12 Songs from Home, recorded entirely from his home during the lockdown, in May 2020. Undiscovered is sure to satisfy Ludovico’s legion of fans as well as endear his incredible musical works to many new ones.
