INTERVIEW: Shayne Cook

How would you classify your music?

Dark and Hypnotic to raw and unleashed.  I have a wide range of influences from jazz and blues through to pop and in someway on this first album I am finding my feet a little. There is some detail to the movement of the music and an album made for listening through in order.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Nick Cave

City and Colour

Jeff Buckley

Ainslie Wills

The Beatles

What do you want fans to take from your music?

Nothing in a particular but maybe something that sits with them where they are at.  I know when I listen to music it means different things to me than it did  when I listened to the same song 10 years ago.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

I live in Melbourne, Australia which I believe is one of the most thriving musical cities in the world. However, due to covid , we have no live music right now.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

Big call, I’ve been to many. Im going to say Nick Cave at the /Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbournes

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

I personally like Restless Lovers. Ifs probably not the most instantly catchy song. But it has a beauty to it that comes from listening more.  One of my favourite artists, Jeff Buckleys song, Last Goodbye – I didn’t really like the first time I heard it.  The album Grace became one of my favourites.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

Well to start, I had to learn about releasing music and there’s more to it than I thought.  Secondly I have continued song writing since completing this album and I can see progression in writing from the first which is a positive I guess.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Classic question. Robert Johnson.

What’s next for you?

When out of lock down – looking forward to playing live around Australia and heading overseas when the world permits.  While in lockdown I have come up with the skeleton of the next album and ideally will be able to get in to the studio prior to the end of the year.
