CBG vs CBD: What Are the Main Differences?

Just as you’ve come to understand what CBD is and how it works, they come out with CBG! While CBG is a different chemical compound than CBD or any other cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, it shares some therapeutic benefits and behaves in a similar way when introduced into the body.

Current research on CBG is limited, but more and more lab tests are being completed as this compound shows promising results. So if you’re wondering whats the difference between CBG vs CBD, read on to learn about this cannabinoid and how it could help you.

What Is CBG?

CBG, or cannabigerol, is a phytocannabinoid sourced from plants like cannabis. CBG is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, which means it won’t give you a “high” feeling.

CBG exists only in trace amounts, less than one percent, in the cannabis plant. Today, cannabis plants have high concentrations of THC or CBD, which are other cannabinoids that differ in chemical structure from CBG.

CBG Is the Mother Cannabinoid

Although CBG is known as a lesser cannabinoid because it is found in such small amounts in the plant, CBG is known as the mother cannabinoid. This is because it is the first cannabinoid to develop within the plant. As the plant matures, it converts its CBG molecules into a hundred other cannabinoids, THC and CBD among them.

So while CBG and CBD differ, it is safe to say that CBG is the chemical parent of CBD.

The Potential Benefits of CBG

CBG has only very recently gone under research, so our knowledge of its benefits are limited. However, it shows promising results in the treatment of cancerous tumors, anxiety, depression, autism, pain, and inflammation.

It can relax muscles and shows signs of some anti-fungal properties. Other research has shown that CBG may be useful in treating glaucoma, bladder dysfunctions, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, and Huntington’s disease.

Due to its limited research on long-term effects and how it interacts with other medicines, scientists would recommend exercising caution when using this substance.

The Effects of CBG

Like CBD, the effects of CBG are therapeutic. The substance will not cause you to feel high and it does not have any mind-altering effects.

In fact, when used with THC, CBG will lessen the effects of the head high that you feel. The substance has also shown to increase the appetite in rats.

The effects of CBG seem to have some overlap with those of CBD, while some benefits are entirely unique to each.

Know the Difference Between CBG vs CBD

CBG and CBD differ in their chemical structure and effects on the body. They do share some of the same therapeutic effects while being entirely different cannabinoids. When comparing CBG vs CBD, know they are both non-psychoactive and will not produce a high, and that there is less completed research on CBG.
