What is a calling? When do you know you need to listen to your passion and turn your life around? Gilmas, a singer-songwriter/music producer coming from Paris, is a late bloomer. Even if he started the piano at the age of 12 and classical singing at 18, he used to be a philosophy professor at Paris-La Sorbonne for many years. ‘It took me time to give myself completely to music’, he says. A few years later, not only did he compose and produce hundreds of tracks, but he also relocated to New York, building his digital studio and music label, Get Started Music. He reflects on this slice of life in his E.P Starting Over, released in 2019 on Spotify and Apple Music, where you can hear upbeat songs, with sometimes a pinch of melancholy such as Stalling or You Crazy You.
Gilmas feels he’s a part of it now, working hard on his music in his Williamsburg, BK studio, praising the empowerment given to artists by modern technology. What turns him on the most is to immerse himself in the creative process, bringing a track to life from just an intuition or an idea, blending acoustic instruments with samples and beats programming: ‘it’s like a motionless journey’, he says. Inspiration was scarce, indeed, during the pandemic, but he tried to make the most of it, releasing 3 singles these last weeks as different perspectives on this unique period: Alone In New York, Sogno D’Italia and Nervous Lockdown: with this last one, the title says it all!
