Hi Alex, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey! Thanks for having me! I’m great!!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fake Friends”?
We just made top 20 currently number 19 in the official charts and I’m buzzing! It’s so exciting!
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
Yeah actually I was in a writing session and I got kicked out because they didn’t like my melodies or ideas! They had seemed so nice but then they just turned and made me feel so bad. I remember walking out of the session crying. I called my mum and she told me to toughen up and to go into another room and write an even better song! That’s the story behind Fake Friends!
How was the recording and writing process?
I was on a songwriting camp in Asia and after having such a bad day the day before I went into my next day/session really ready to prove myself we wrote 2 songs and I was exhausted and the producer (Mark Alston) who is amazing by the way! Turned around and said do you have anything else? I panicked and was like ugh yeah I have this idea (terrified) he wouldn’t like it but he loved it, it was recorded and made into a slow jam hip hop pop track! Which then 3 years later PS1 would pick up and turn into a dance track!
What role does Australia play in your music?
It’s my home! Growing up on indie rock bands I believe that comes through in my music! I was heavily influenced by live elements always being at concerts and having live music around me every weekend at local pubs and bars! I believe Australians take risks in their creations and go to melodies and concepts that might be deemed too risky or experimental. But time and time again we hear new sounds coming from Australia. We are such a laid back culture and I think that helps in not overthinking and just giving things a go!
With the major reception from your previous musical work – do you feel any pressure when putting new material together or rather the opposite?
I think I always feel pressure when putting new material out. Creating it I never feel the pressure I just allow for whatever is to come that day.. but when it comes to putting it out I always feel pressure, music is so subjective though so the reality is people will make there own mind up. You just have to love what you have made and then hopefully everyone else will too!
Do you tend to take a different approach when collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
Absolutely! Through the pandemic, I’ve been working a lot more by myself and I love it, I started writing by myself so it’s been amazing to take myself back to the beginning and remind myself why I started writing in the first place. That being said I love having collaborators, receiving other people’s energies and bouncing ideas is so important and really helps to make magic!
Can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! My new song Playing Up comes out 18th of September! Go check it out! I love it!! Pre-save here – http://show.co/5IJNjT7

What else is happening next in Alex Hosking’s world?
