Aaron Smith unveils emotional video for new single ‘Unconditional’

Following on from the acclaim he received for his sophomore EP ‘For My Father’ in August, which has seen his total streaming numbers top 43 million since its release, fast-rising singer songwriter Aaron Smith now returns with the video for the EP’s lead single ‘Unconditional’, which also features guest vocals from his Platoon label mate Holly Humberstone.

Much like the topics on his new collection, ‘Unconditional’ aims to confront the demons that haunted his adolescence and how, as an adult, he can reflect on those experiences and use his songwriting to truly express the impact that those times have had on him.

Directed by renowned filmmaker Stevie Russell, best known for his work with Kodaline, Dirty Blonde, and James Arthur, the new video captures an emotional tale in the songwriter’s life. Despite not being aware of his personal circumstances when making the video, Russell was able to create a bold and vivid story about loss and acceptance that resonated enormously to Aaron’s own upbringing.

Director Stevie Russell explains, “Aaron’s track has a hauntingly beautiful quality that immediately hooks you in. We wanted to create a video that would compliment this feeling, something ambiguous that was still full of emotion and suggestion. Hopefully, people will draw their own conclusions from the narrative.”

Having seen the final edit of the video, Aaron said, “The video really spoke to me when I watched it with my Auntie and got to see her reaction to it. My Mum passed away when I was 15 and she and my Aunt were twins. I’m really close to my Auntie. I feel like I’m with my mum when I’m with her and the video really captures that special feeling for me. I’m so pleased with the story Stevie was able to create and hope I get to work with him again.”
Aaron’s new EP ‘For My Father’ was recorded and produced with Joe Rubel, with the exception of ‘Brother’, which was recorded by Ed Tullet (who works/performs with Novo Amor) and was co-produced by Ed and Joe. Grammy and Mercury Prize-shortlisted Mix & Mastering engineer Prash mastered the EP.
