Weekend Movie Binge: SNL Stars

My movie recommendations for this week takes us to Peacock, the new streaming service from NBC. I feel good about this one because Peacock is technically free, but the free version has ads. Hey, I remember when Hulu had ads. I’m OK with that. There are a lot of really good movies on there, including classics. If you are a Alfred Hitchcock fan you should check out Peacock. My initial notion was to do three Bill Murray movies, there are like a dozen on there, but instead I’m going with three different films starring Saturday Night Live cast members. No, they aren’t Saturday Night Live movies. I’m not going to ask you to watch Stuart Saves His Family.

Start off with the Chevy Chase vehicle Fletch. Honestly, I think it’s probably Chase’s best movie. Yes, better than Caddyshack. Chase plays an investigative reporter who has the sarcasm and quips of Chase but with a little more edge and sandpaper. It’s a comedy, but it doesn’t skimp on the mystery and the drama.

Then, we move to another comedy, but a pricklier one. Welcome to Me stars Kristen Wiig as a woman with Borderline Personality Disorder who wins the lottery and decides to buy her own TV show. Wiig’s character is unsparingly awful and her mental health issues aren’t treated as a joke. That makes for a dark, sobering comedy. Wiig gives it her all, and it mostly works, even if I felt a smidge let down when I finally watched it. It’s still good, though. I just thought it had the potential to be great.

Meatballs (1979) directed by Ivan Reitman • Reviews, film + cast • Letterboxd

Finally, end with one of those Bill Murray movies. You could go with Meatballs if you are in a silly mood, but otherwise there’s Lost in Translation. It’s a moody, slow film, which I think makes it good for ending your evening. Maybe you fall asleep during it even, but it will be a pleasant sleep.

There’s my recommendation for the weekend. My other idea? Psycho, American Psycho, and the two Psych movies.
